The line from the USSR, because of which he received deuces. Removed rust in 5 minutes
In a sad state, I got this line. It was problematic to consider the numbers on it, especially when the lighting was slightly weaker. Yes, and rusted decently, besides, everything was covered with small shells and became rough. In short, I didn't want to work with it anymore, for this reason I decided to remove the rust and put it in order. Just about how I managed to remove the rust and show the numbers of the centimeter scale, I will briefly tell you.
It all started with digesting a ruler in citric acid solution. This is perhaps the fastest method I know of to get rid of metal corrosion. Not always and not everywhere applicable, true, but definitely fast and reliable. Thus, more than onceremoved old rust and it worked out great.
I add a spoonful of citric acid to about a liter of water and dissolve it well. Usually I put acid in already boiling water.
Now it's time to boil the ruler along the entire length in this "broth". Spent about 5 minutes on this. On the way, I had to open a window, otherwise the fumes of boiling acid hit my eyes hard and this is also not useful for the lungs.
I etched away the rust in a few slow passes, which was enough. If there was more corrosion, you would have to bend the ruler with a ring, tie the edges and boil all at once and for a longer time.
After boiling in acid, he carefully wiped the ruler with a cloth to remove the oxide film formed on it, which created a black coating. It was not possible to erase all of it, therefore the ruler had to be additionally sanded. And not the smallest sandpaper. This was also necessary due to the presence of the smallest corrosion pits along the entire front surface.
And here's the result! After finishing polishing, the ruler shone like new. Clearly outlined GOST 427-75 at one end and an inscription "USSR" on another. I thought there was a five-pointed quality mark next to it, but it turned out that the icon was different, not familiar to me (cm. photo 6). Perhaps you know and tell me what it means?
It is now pleasant to work with such a tool, and I even immediately wanted to measure something here and there.
It is known that the accuracy of a steel ruler is higher than a wooden one, and even more so a plastic one. I remember at school, in labor lessons, the teacher repeatedly asked for an assessment to draw a line of a given length and then checked it with exactly such a metal ruler.
And we, the students, had all kinds of rulers, and for some time we did not understand why they measured out for a long time and painfully 10.2cm each, 8.7cm each, 15.5cm each, etc., but they didn't get it. Then, nevertheless, they tried to find out the truth from the teacher and realized that it was something in the rulers and the difference in comparison with ours was a few millimeters.
Yes, thanks to the ruler and the school I remembered. It was a good time ...
