How to Install a Wooden Pole to Prevent Rotting: 6 Tips
A wooden post is a practical and inexpensive building material for building a fence, gazebo or shed, but if installed incorrectly, it will rot in 5-7 years. Wood is most vulnerable in the soil, where moisture regularly accumulates - it speeds up the decomposition process. Take advantage of tips that will prolong the life of wooden poles.
How to extend the life of a wooden post
- Before installation, the pole must be treated with impregnations that protect the wood from decay and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The lower part of the pillar must be treated with a deeply penetrating antiseptic.
- In the pit under the post, it is necessary to create a drainage cushion of rubble: a 15 cm layer will be enough to drain water.
- Concrete should be poured 5–8 centimeters above ground level. This is necessary so that water does not accumulate at the column.
- When mixing the cement mortar, add a liquid detergent at the rate of 50 g of the agent per bucket of cement. This will reduce the number of pores in the concrete, which will significantly reduce moisture build-up.
- The upper joint of the post with concrete should be treated with a sealant. This will also prevent moisture from entering the wood. The sealant should be selected for concrete.
- A protective cap must be installed on top of the post. If its installation is not provided, you need to cut the post at an angle - this will prevent water from accumulating on the cut.
