Hosta got out? Change your care in May - get an emerald bush in your flower bed by July
Fiery fireworks, fellow flower growers!
Want to see a fabulous host this year? Start taking proper care of your plant right now, in May. Your care will be a solid foundation for the growth of an attractive mop of leaves.
My experience: In my garden there are several bushes of my favorite hosta. Yes, the flower is very attractive even with no maintenance. True, not for long) I assure you that if you try now to make a "starter set" of care procedures for the plant, you will be pleasantly surprised by the result in a month or two. A well-groomed host grows prettier and more voluminous at times!
Forget bad advice, but rather watch the ward
Yesterday I came across an article on the Internet about spring care for a host, in which an unknown author advised, immediately after the appearance of feathers, to thoroughly loosen the ground in the near-trunk circle. Don't do this, please - save the whole bush.
The host is a real slow-witted. Yes, now she has released, say, 10 "feathers". Having loosened the ground around them, we risk destroying 10 more, just beginning to grow from the rhizome, with our own hands. The time for loosening will come much later, when the hosta bush is already somewhat formed. The time will come in June.
While walking around your garden, go to the host, squat down and "Say hello": look, did the rhizome appear on the surface? This happens because the soil is washed away by water and blown out by the wind. If the hosta rhizome begins to stick out from the ground, sprinkle it with light soil. And in the hot summer, the plant will not suffer from a lack of moisture.
Look towards mulching
I know from myself that you can't just take and start mulching) I myself looked towards this method for a long time and am glad that I decided.
Mulch retains moisture in the soil. In principle, nothing more is required from her. It is on moist soil that hosts grow up as sweeping beauties.
Author's note: This technique is especially useful for hosts growing in open areas. There, the direct rays of the sun dry up the soil very quickly.
I prefer to mulch the hosta with pine bark, cones and litter. Thorny mulch partly scares off slugs - the worst enemies of leaf integrity and garden aesthetics. Choose the "spicy" option to keep your host cute.
Author's experience: I change the mulch every year, because byaki can live in it: larvae, bugs, fungi, bacteria. But it's worth it!
The main rule "2 P": watering and feeding hosts in the spring
I have already emphasized that for a beautiful cap of leaves, the host always needs moderately moist soil. Starting in May, I water it as needed, when the topsoil in the flowerbed dries out.
The host does not need a large volume of water, because its root system is rather superficial. Enough for the soil to get 10-15 cm wet. The exact volume depends on the size and age of the bush.
For example, for young hosts I pour only 1 liter of water, for large ones - already about 3.
Remember that the hotter and sunnier the weather, the faster your charges will become thirsty! And now we turn to the most "tasty" - dressing.
The first good thing to do is treat the host nitrogen. It is just needed for active leaf growth. My favorites in the Nitrogen Fertilizers section of the menu are urea and calcium nitrate.
How do I do: When there is no time, I just scatter the pellets around the bush. When there is time, I make a solution according to the instructions and spill it on wet ground. In the second option, the effect will come faster
But it would be unfair to leave the hosta without other important macronutrients - potassium and phosphorus. They are needed for the uniform development of the underground and aboveground parts. And their balance, I emphasize, is the guarantee of the health of any plant.. Therefore, 2 weeks after the first feeding, use "Nitroammofoska", in which nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are contained in equal parts. Voila!
