How to veneer the basement of a private house: a review of materials Part 1

The basement is a transitional wall between the foundation and the main wall of the house. This part of the building is located close to the ground and needs to be cladding - a measure necessary to protect the premises from moisture and cold air. At the moment, there is a wide range of finishing materials for the base, which we will consider in the article.

The plinth can be performed as a supporting structure or as a decorative enclosing (false plinth). This building element is divided into three types: protruding; falling; flush with the wall. Regardless of the type, the same materials are applied to them, but with one exception: it is necessary to build a drain cornice above the protruding base.

Plinth cladding materials: basic requirements

Materials for finishing the lower part of the building must meet certain requirements, namely: have resistance to mechanical stress, including wind; be resistant to moisture and atmospheric precipitation, insulating qualities. Before cladding, it is recommended to rough out the basement with waterproofing.

Plaster

Plastering is a simple and reliable way to cover the plinth. Solutions can be used in different ways: from the simplest to textured compositions or plasters interspersed with stone chips (granite, marble). Plaster can perfectly imitate natural stone. This type of finish is applicable to any type of basement wall.

Advantages of the material: low cost, variety of colors and textures, maintainability. Cons of the material: limited resource; the need for regular painting; difficulty in removing contaminants.

Basement siding

Will look great on the bottom of the wall siding. For the plinth, reinforced siding is produced with a thickness of 2.5–3 mm. Popular are metal panels that imitate stone, wood, brick, tiles. Siding is suitable for any type of base.

Material advantages: high moisture resistance; mechanical strength; wear resistance; wide temperature range of application; resistance to mold and mildew; maintainability; ease of maintenance; high aesthetic qualities. Among the shortcomings are noted: labor intensity of work; the need for the construction of a frame and thermal insulation.

Corrugated board

This is a kind of analogue of siding, where the cladding is not made with panels, but with a professional sheet or corrugated board. Finishing with these materials is considered a budget option. The advantages of the material are: high strength; resistance to atmospheric phenomena; wear resistance; low cost; high speed and ease of work. Cons - the need for a frame and insulation, low aesthetic qualities.

Plinth thermal panels

Modern technological material that appeared on the market relatively recently. This type of finish is a decorative facing made of clinker tiles with insulation, usually polyurethane or extruded polystyrene foam, with a thickness of 20–80 mm.

The advantages of the material are: light weight; resistance to weathering; strength; high thermal insulation qualities; ease of installation; does not require additional insulation; aesthetic qualities. The disadvantages are: high cost; fire hazard; the need for the construction of a frame and a ventilation gap.
