How to Install a Wooden Pole to Prevent Rotting Part 3
There are dozens of technologies that extend the life of wood in extreme conditions - in the ground. IN the first and second parts we told how to install a wooden post so that it does not rot. The material received a lot of reviews, and for this reason we are continuing the review.
Protecting the wooden post from decay
The most vulnerable part of the post is the bottom in contact with the ground and 20-30 cm above the ground. It is this area that must be protected from decay.
Treatment with primer and roofing waterproofing
The method includes two stages - processing the bottom of the pillar with a primer, and then applying a layer of any fusion roofing material. First of all, the post is treated with a bituminous primer for roofing works - this is a surface preparation for applying waterproofing. In the second step, one layer of roofing insulation is fused with a blowtorch. In this case, the lower cut of the pillar must be made even and a piece of waterproofing must also be melted onto it.
Treatment with creosote (coal oil)
This technology is used by railroad workers - wooden sleepers are processed with creosote. This improves their performance and prevents wood decomposition. Creosote is a good preservative and reliable protection of wood from insects!
Treating the column with creosote is similar to impregnating wood with used engine oil, but with one difference - the creosote cannot be heated, as it is flammable and toxic. It is also impregnated with the lower part of the wooden post. In industrial volumes, processing is carried out by immersing the sleepers in a bath with creosote. At home, you can brush two or three times along the bottom of the post. This is necessary for more effective absorption.
When working with this substance, you must observe safety measures - creosote can cause damage to the skin and respiratory tract! And you should also think - is the game worth the candle? The toxicity of creosote can harm the vegetable garden or animals.
Bitumen treatment
This technology also prevents moisture and decay from the post. Processing is done by applying hot bitumen to the surface, but that's not all. While the bitumen is heated and has adhesive properties, the post is wrapped in thick cellophane. Thus, a surface protected from moisture is created.
