I got a forgotten flower from the USSR and hardly looked after it. I show how the rarity thanked me

Fiery fireworks, fellow flower growers!

I have a passion for old "Soviet" plants. The general public has forgotten about them, and, in many cases, I think it is not deserved. For example, is "The Bride and Groom" in any way inferior to "Women's Happiness"? In addition, such flowers are usually unpretentious: after all, they grew well in conditions when there were no newfangled fertilizers, and only selected specimens were spoiled with lamps for supplementary lighting.

For 20-30 years, both the windows and the flowers on them have changed

A year and a half ago, I saw a beautiful plant in the clinic, which caused pleasant memories from childhood.. In the school classroom, on a cupboard near the window, there was a "Forest Cactus", as Lyudmila Konstantinovna called it. And when the "cactus" of impressive size finally blossomed, students, parents and passers-by opened their mouths in admiration.

Needless to say, I could not resist and took an offshoot of "forest cactus" in the hospital. Now you can hardly find him anywhere...

Of course, I asked the nurse for permission beforehand. I do not belong to the category of those impudent people who justify the theft with signs about "such cuttings take root better" ...

So who is he - forest cactus?

An example of bloom from the Internet, which I am still only striving for

The official name of the Soviet pet is epiphyllum. It is a succulent (has the ability to store moisture and consume it as needed - for example, in heat and drought) and an epiphyte (grows hanging from trees).

Based on the foregoing, it is easy to guess that the epiphyllum (or forest cactus, as who likes to call it more) is a surprisingly unpretentious flower. And perfect for the lazy / novice florist. True, you still need to know some nuances.

  • Epiphyllum is rarely watered, I loosen the soil with a stick and watch when it dries 3-4 cm. But here it is also important to look at the volume of the pot (according to this criterion, I wait for a third to dry out). From the bay, the forest cactus will quickly rot!
  • Epiphyllum is not particularly picky about feeding. This is a flower that will be happy with several doses of fertilizer per season without any schedules there. Especially if it sits in new soil.
From the author: I began to regularly fertilize the forest cactus only at the moment when the first buds appeared
A forest cactus in good conditions is lavish with flower waterfalls. One flower withers - so the other immediately unfolds. With this, perhaps, the epiphyllum bribed me. Good, infection! Remains in the flower collection
  • Epiphyllum loves good lighting and temperature drops from room to... slightly cooler.
  • This is first of all ampel plant. On the windowsill, it looks good for the time being, until the leaves are not quite long. Then they begin to fit on the windowsill (as you can see in the photo above), which looks unaesthetic). Better to come up with a suspension or solemnly hoist the pot on a stand.

In general, the forest cactus is very similar to the Decembrist in care. Therefore, if you, like me, want to have a rare flower on your window or loggia, then there should be no difficulties.

My stalk, brought from the hospital, quickly took root and boldly began to grow. But... at first I didn't want to bloom. Other indoor plant lovers advised me to move it to the loggia, where the air temperature will drop at night. Such a pass to the liking of "Forest Cactus"

With the arrival of warmth, I began to regularly open the window for ventilation at night. And how glad I was, you can imagine when buds began to appear on the epiphyllum and, finally, the first flower opened:

If you like epiphyllum and the article was interesting, please put "Thumbs up" in the answer and subscribe to the channel. I am trying for you! Thank you, my darlings. I recommend to all flower growers to read about my super-feeding for garden (and not only!) Plants: When the plant is in bud, I do a cocktail spray. And everything blooms more magnificently.
