Nowadays, it is difficult to find someone who has never tasted strawberries. Although, in fact, this is a very young berry - by the standards of gardening, it is only a couple of centuries old. The fact is that the strawberries that we know are the result of the crossing of Chilean strawberries and Virginia strawberries, which happened by coincidence in 1766 in France. Of course, later the first large strawberries underwent selection, after which a monoecious plant with large berries was obtained, which was brought to Russia a little more than two centuries ago. By the way, the first strawberry variety that was brought to our country is called "Victoria".

What to look for

If you decide to grow strawberries on your site, pay attention to whether the selected variety is suitable for the climatic conditions of your region.

The main indicators when choosing strawberries:

  • resistance to pests;
  • frost resistance;
  • drought tolerance.

It is best to choose several varieties of strawberries at once, in order to subsequently decide which one is more suitable for taste, as well as the amount of harvest. Experienced gardeners recommend that in the first year of planting strawberries, spray an aqueous solution of fruit jam or honey over flowering bushes to attract bees. This helps young bushes to pollinate and obtain a rich harvest in the coming season.

The best strawberry varieties for central Russia

The conditions in each lane are different, and the type of strawberry that can be grown is also different. For example, the middle zone of Russia is a danger of frosts in spring and autumn. Therefore, you need to choose only those varieties that are resistant to such weather conditions.

Queen Elizabeth

This is a young strawberry variety bred in Russia in 2001. It tolerates frost well, suitable for both the middle zone and colder regions.

The berries are of different sizes, sometimes differ in color density. At the same time, the shape of the berries is correct, the appearance is attractive, so to speak "marketable".

"Queen Elizabeth" is a remontant strawberry, that is, it bears fruit throughout the season. If the climate is favorable, and the weather conditions throughout the year are uniform and without sudden changes, then the crop can be harvested two to three times. It usually bears fruit in early June, mid-summer and late September. The average yield per year is 6 kg per sq. m.

The variety has a bright aroma and sweet taste. The berries are easy to transport.

Caring for "Queen Elizabeth" is not difficult, but should be done on an ongoing basis. So it is recommended to fertilize the soil with phosphorus before planting, and to give complementary foods with potassium and nitrogen during the growth period. Constant watering and organic fertilization will provide large, sweet berries throughout the season.

Gigantella

One of the favorite varieties of gardeners in the middle lane. "Gigantella" is distinguished by large berries that can reach 10 cm in diameter. The bushes are large, up to 50 cm high. It is recommended to plant no more than 4 bushes per 1 sq. m.

The strawberry yield of this variety is high - almost 2 kg from one bush. The taste of the berries is sugary-sweet, the pulp is dense like a watermelon.

Gigantella begins to bloom in May, and bears fruit from mid-June to mid-July.

FORUMHOUSE Maev_61 member:
"Gigantella responds to care with an increase in yield: 4 times feeding with chicken manure. You can get up to 3 kilograms from a bush. The number of peduncles increases, more ovaries on the peduncle, more large berries, and as a result, a good harvest. It is also resistant to ticks. Without care, 3 berries on the peduncle, several berries from the bush. This variety is intensive type ".

Zenga Zengana

Another strawberry variety that perfectly tolerates the hardships of the climate of central Russia. It blooms later than those listed above, but it bears a lot of fruits. The harvest peaks in mid-July.

The berries are large, fragrant, and redden unevenly during ripening. The pulp is sweet and soft. Ideal for jam and compotes. Easy to transport due to the dense skin. After heat treatment, it retains its shape.

Maintenance consists of regular watering and organic fertilizers. Zenga Zengana loves sunny areas, so it is recommended to plant bushes where there is no shade from other plants and trees. The yield from one bush can reach 3.5 kg.

The best strawberry varieties for southern Russia

The southern regions of Russia are characterized by drought and rather scarce rainfall. Therefore, the choice of strawberry varieties for cultivation in the plots in the south of the country should be based on the resistance to the weather conditions of the region. The following varieties may be the best choices.

Albion

A repairing strawberry variety that can be easily transported. Drought tolerant, but sensitive to frost and low temperatures.

Landing "Albion" is carried out in closed ground. It is recommended to use organic fertilizers. But watering should be organized so that there is no excess moisture. Strawberries of this variety bear fruit well at +30, but with an excess of water, the berries lose their taste and aroma.

Albion fruits are medium in size, bright red and glossy. The pulp is pink, and the smell is almost perfumery - persistent, slightly intrusive and memorable. "Albion" can be safely called the standard of strawberries.

FORUMHOUSE member sergej_161:
"The most fragrant, Albion. Unusual aroma for strawberries. A garden bed 40 meters long, when it ripens, you can find and pick berries with your eyes closed ".
