Strawberries: The best varieties for all regions of Russia Part 2
Large and small, dark red and orange, strong and juicy - any strawberry is tasty, but not all varieties are suitable for growing in Russian soils. IN first part we reviewed the best varieties for central Russia, now - varieties for the south, Urals and north-west of the country.
Strawberry varieties for southern Russia
The south of Russia is an arid and poor rainfall region. The selection of strawberries for cultivation in the southern regions should be based on the resistance of the varieties to heat.
Marshal
One of the most unpretentious strawberry varieties - it easily tolerates drought, is resistant to parasites, and is not picky about the soil. The yield is high even in the first year after planting. By the way, this variety was bred in 1890 and is considered one of the oldest cultivated in our time.
Bushes are high, making a tight planting possible. You can harvest up to 1 kg of strawberries from one bush. The berries are red, quite dense and easy to transport. The taste of "Marshal" is bright with pronounced sourness.
Lambada
Lambada is an early strawberry variety. It starts blooming in April, and the first berries appear in early May. The yield is average, but stable. Easily tolerates drought, but is susceptible to fungal diseases during the flowering period. Therefore, the bushes must be processed.
The color of the berries is bright, the sizes are from small to medium. The aroma is pronounced, strawberry. Suitable for both fresh consumption and jam.
Strawberry varieties for the Urals
The climate of the Urals differs from other regions of the country, therefore, the choice of strawberries for cultivation in summer cottages should fall on sustainable and high-quality varieties. And it is also worth considering the fact that strawberries in this region require special care and nutrition.
Festivalnaya
According to the Ural gardeners, Festivalnaya strawberry is the best variety for the region. It is well adapted to drought, and at the same time manages to give out the entire crop before the onset of the rainy season.
The bushes are fluffy, bloom at the same time, so you can harvest at once Plants are resistant to pests, which makes maintenance easier. However, it is worth considering the susceptibility of "Festivalnaya" to verticillary wilting.
The berries are red and aromatic. The first crop is always larger than the next.
Beauty of Zagorya
An early strawberry variety that has taken root well in the Urals. The first fruits appear in early June. The plant itself easily tolerates winter and frost, loves the sun and illuminated areas.
The berries are dark red inside and out. The taste of "Krasavitsa Zagorya" is pronounced, aromatic. This is a variety of table strawberries, although they can also be used for jams, preserves and compotes.
Red Gauntlet
Another favorite strawberry variety among the Ural gardeners. "Red Gauntlet" ripens quite late - the end of July, but it has good resistance to frost. It easily survives the winter and does not require additional shelter. The plant is resistant to fungi, but requires regular feeding and treatment from pests.
The berries are red, juicy, and have a very pleasant, pronounced taste. Well suited both for consumption raw and for subsequent processing.
Strawberry varieties for the Northwest region
The northwest of our country is distinguished by cool summers, so it is best for gardeners to choose frost-resistant strawberry varieties, as well as varieties that tolerate the absence of the sun well.
Sudarushka
The best variety, according to gardeners who grow strawberries in northwest Russia. Differs in high frost resistance. The variety requires proper care and timely watering. It is relatively resistant to diseases and parasites.
The berries are red and aromatic. Harvest "Sudarushka" gives good - up to 7 kg per 1 sq. m. in good weather and proper care. The plant forms two levels of flowers, so the lower fruits can sink to the ground, leading to rotting. It is recommended to use agrofibre or mulch the soil.
Tsarskoye Selo
An excellent choice if your site is located in the Novgorod or Leningrad region. It tolerates frost well and has a high yield. However, one should beware of the strawberry sawfly and process the plant in time, inspect the underside of the leaf and cleanse the pest eggs.
The berries of "Tsarskoye Selo" strawberries are red, "covered" with gloss, dense, taste sweet and aromatic. They go well for food, but can be used for jam and compotes.
Onega
This strawberry variety does not differ in its outstanding taste, but due to its frost resistance and stable fruiting, it is appreciated by gardeners throughout the northwestern region. "Onega" is resistant to pests, the exception is powdery mildew; unpretentious to weather conditions, tolerates a small number of sunny days.
The berry taste is sweet and pleasant. Uniform strawberry aroma. The harvest can reach 4 kg per 1 sq. m. It is good to use such strawberries in preparations for the winter.
