Ants attacking buds: is it worth fighting at all?

According to some sources, ants cause irreparable harm to peonies. The delicate scent of a flower is pleasant not only to you and me, comrades. Fragrant nectar attracts hordes of ants from all over the area.

And in order to get to the desired core, insects gnaw into the still unopened bud, gnawing the petals and, if successful, draw out life juices. In the best scenario, the flower is deformed. At worst, gardeners blame ants for the buds simply drying up without opening.

Other sources say: nothing like that, ants are not in business. A gnawed flower is the result of deeds exclusively of thrips, and dried buds are a sad, albeit natural result of the owner's careless care.

Ants have a special relationship with aphids. They breed and eat it. Therefore, some gardeners are sure: the bud eaters will bring another attack along with them. Another says: "Get away from the ants, they only help the gardener - they eat a bunch of other pests!"

The truth is somewhere near. These are ants for you and me. Yes, someone is more, someone is less. In fact, among them there are species that are true predators, which do not need to gnaw a bud for nectar for nothing: they would rather eat aphids on a rose. Smaller species periodically become vegetarian and can undermine the buds.

I confess that I have no particular desire to understand the intricacies of the classification of insects. My main argument is that they look disgusting! Therefore, a few years ago, when I got the first plot and, in fact, peonies, I declared a fight against them.

I think it's time to take stock: how you can actually drive ants from peonies

I have read dozens of articles on how to get rid of ants on peonies. And 80% of the instructions did not say about the most important thing, where to start: if there is an anthill on the site, then the insects will return again and again. Having found a house on your hacienda or in the immediate vicinity, at the same time as protecting the peonies, it is worth starting the "great eviction" of problem insects.

Now I will tell you about my experience of running.

I'll start with purchased funds

On sale there is granules, which are advised to scatter on the ground around the bush. A la "Anteater". I read many positive reviews, but they did not help me personally: the ants boldly ran to the cherished stems, ignoring the poison.

Unexpectedly helped ant gel, which took away the excitement and enthusiasm from insects. The name is "The Great War", This is not an advertisement, there are many analogues on sale. Which are perhaps also effective. But I tried it:

As soon as an invasion of peonies can not be noticed only by the blind, you just need to smear the stems of the plants. The only caveat is that after rain and watering, the procedure has to be repeated again. But then I found a cool folk remedy, a nugget among the stones.

I can’t hold back my emotions, but only an eccentric with the letter "M" could come up with advice to chase away ants with sugar solutions and yeast. The treat will collect not only ants, but also all kinds of pests from all the surrounding villages.

And do not flatter yourself, thinking that the peonies will remain on the sidelines. They consider the nectar from the buds to be an excellent snack.
