How to sheathe a wall with plasterboard with a layer of sound insulation
With ordinary plasterboard panels, modern owners often level rough surfaces for decorative finishes. This is not surprising since drywall - a material that can act as a truly reliable rough base even for ceramic tiles.
But in order to make such a covering even more functional, you can place noise-absorbing material under the drywall. This is useful when owners do not want to hear extraneous sounds.
1. Fastening the frame for plasterboard panels
The most correct solution in this case is to fix the drywall with a frame method. Of course, metal guides can also be used to create the frame, since they have particularly high strength characteristics. But the problem is that metal does not protect against noise propagation. For this reason, it is still better to choose a wooden beam to create a frame. For example, bars about 10 cm thick are suitable.
Fix them upright on the walls, leaving gaps of about 50-70 cm. It is also advisable to place horizontal jumpers at least in some areas so that the plasterboard cladding is more reliable.
2. Laying sound-absorbing material on the frame
There are many suitable types of noise suppressors. But, in principle, the most ordinary mineral wool is perfect in this case. Mineral wool panels are placed between the elements of the frame, making sure that there are no gaps or gaps. That is, the slabs are laid very tightly.
They can be fixed with construction tape, dowels, metal brackets. If there is a danger that liquids will penetrate through the drywall, it is better to additionally lay a simple plastic wrap over the mineral wool.
3. Installation of plasterboard panels on the frame
Finally, you can proceed to the installation of drywall. The panels are placed on the frame structure, fixed with self-tapping screws, which are placed approximately every 30 cm along all the frame elements. Putty is placed on the seams remaining between the gypsum plasterboard sheets. It is carefully smoothed, treated with a grater or at least sandpaper. Before finishing work, a layer of primer will remain on the plasterboard sheathing.
After such events, the owner will receive a flat and reliable surface on which it is easy to lay a variety of decorative coatings. At the same time, the walls will also protect against unnecessary noise in the best possible way.
