I found out whether it is worth tearing the lower leaves from the cabbage. I won't make a blunder again
Fiery fireworks, comrades vegetable growers!
A couple of years ago I saw on TV a plot where a summer resident advised to cut off the leaves of young heads of cabbage. She was convinced that the stressful situation would convince the cabbage to build up a large mass, as if compensating for the artificial damage. At the same time, the woman showed "her harvest": the heads of cabbage were 2 times more than mine. It's tempting, really!
I decided to check out the unusual advice, which seemed like a reasonable, practical experience. On your site. AND... No miracle happened.
Some of the heads of cabbage turned out to be mediocre, some even less than usual. But even then summer did not spoil my cabbage beds with good weather. Needless to say, the second year experiment also ended in failure?
Everything fell into place
To my happiness in the garden, the other day I talked with an agronomist. Which finally explained about the removal of lower leaves from cabbage heads.
There are several situations where manipulation is warranted:
- The most obvious option is that the bottom leaf is infected. If it has become the abode of fungi and bacteria, then it is wiser to remove the source of danger. Until microorganisms penetrated deeper into the leaves and began to sharpen the forks from the inside. Simply put - decaying sheets must be removed before they do business.
- The same goes for pest attacks. Only in this case, it is still necessary to carry out processing, because the arrogant parasites, most likely, have already managed to stake out a head of cabbage, which is poured with juice.
I am preparing an article on how to protect cabbage heads from annoying and ubiquitous caterpillars. It will be released one of these days. Interesting? Subscribe to the channel at the bottom of the article so as not to miss useful material.
I would also like to say about vascular bacteriosis of cabbage. This is such an attack that cannot be treated. And he can mow a bed in a week. I show the photo:
If you notice such an attack in your garden, immediately remove, or rather burn the infected head of cabbage. And keep a close eye on its neighbors!
- A month before harvesting, the lower leaves are cut off so that the head of cabbage becomes denser. But not in the middle of summer.
After all, the leaf is engaged in taking part in photosynthesis. This means that it feeds the pouring head of cabbage.
And the lower leaves of cabbage are a kind of safety cushion. The plant will take moisture and nutrients from it in the event of force majeure: for example, during the July drought.
So feel free to give the lower leaves a chance to exist - they will come in handy for cabbage!
