Peony transplant and renewal for dummies. I'll tell you: when, how and where

Fiery fireworks, fellow flower growers!

Do you want to grow a peony plantation? We'll have to come to terms with the fact that periodically favorite bushes need to be replanted: renewal is always beneficial and gives a gain in flowering. In the article you will find out when the time is right, how to do everything right and how to choose a worthy place for the King of the Garden.

Peonies that have been growing in one place for more than 10 years need a transplant. As a rule, the plants themselves give us a signal about this, because every year they bloom weaker and weaker. Changing the site, although a little laborious, has a beneficial effect on improving flowering and makes it possible to propagate the plant by dividing the rhizome.

On a note: Unfortunately, sometimes peonies do not easily endure a transplant, and in extreme cases it takes up to 2-3 seasons to recover. A frequent occurrence after this procedure is the lack of flowering, no need to worry about this. You need to wait and give the plants time to "recover".

When to transplant peonies?

Peonies are best replanted in late August - early September, and if the weather permits, this can be done even before the end of September. However, the longer we postpone the transplant, the more susceptible the plant will be to freezing in winter.

The peony should not be transplanted in spring, as this can have a very negative effect on the condition of the plant, which, as a result of transplantation, severely damaged the root system! Autumn term is much better.

How to transplant peonies?

Soon I will write an article about caring for peonies after flowering. Subscribe not to miss!

Before transplanting, cut off all the leaves of the peony. At the end of August, most of them should be already dry and yellow, however, if green leaves still remain, we also prune them. Do not cut the leaves too low - preferably at a height of about 5-10 cm, so as not to damage the buds located at the base.

Around the plant, at a distance of 15-20 cm, drive a pitchfork deeply and pry the ground in order to pull out the rhizome, damaging it as little as possible. After pulling it out, gently shake off the ground so that the roots are clearly visible.

Then we divide the rhizome with a sharp knife. Each of the parts must have multiple roots and buds. Remember, the fewer parts, the more time they need to grow and bloom. At the same time, we remove all dried, rotten and diseased fragments, and fix the cut points with an ointment with a fungicide.

Where to transplant peonies?

In a sunny place, we dig the soil to a depth of 20 cm. The width of the hole should be at least twice the rhizome. The depth of the hole should be such that the part between the roots and the base of the leaves is just below the soil level, about 4 cm deep. We fill the hole with light, permeable, fertile and rich in organic matter and water it abundantly.
