A productive vegetable garden in an extreme summer: we grow vegetables in heat and cold Part 3

The current leap year turned out to be difficult not only against the backdrop of the pandemic, 2020 does not spoil us with the weather - it is distinguished by abnormal changes. The garden and vegetable garden suffer in such conditions and now, more than ever, it is necessary to take increased measures to maintain the plants - without proper care and strategy, we will be left without a crop.

In previous articles, we dwelled on cucumbers and tomatoesas crops most vulnerable to weather conditions. But other plants also suffer in extreme climates. There are agronomic techniques to help your garden cope with bad weather.

Cold-resistant plants

Cabbage, root vegetables, salads feel good in cool weather, but in hot weather they start having problems. These crops need to be well watered, especially white cabbage, otherwise the heads of cabbage grow dry, small, and even crack.

Heat-loving plants

In addition to tomatoes and cucumbers, this group includes peppers, eggplants, zucchini, squash. They need mulching and increased feeding in cold weather, and competent watering and hilling roots in drought.

Heat resistant plants

Watermelons, melons, beans, corn feel great in the heat, continue their growth processes at +40 degrees, and in cold and rain they get sick, wither and refuse to grow.

Tips for growing a vegetable garden in extreme conditions

Given this classification, the gardener will be able to build a competent strategy for caring for the beds. The climate is an unpredictable thing, it is not clear what happens to the weather, so it is better to always be prepared for any unexpected events:

• plant heat-resistant and thermophilic crops in places protected from the wind and in no case in lowlands;
• improve the thermal regime of the soil by introducing a large amount of organic matter for planting such crops;
• make warm beds;
• do not neglect synthetic materials for shelters;
• grow vegetables in greenhouses - they are not as tasty as in the exhaust gas, but you can collect early harvests;
• make a drip irrigation system - no one has regretted it yet;
• be sure to feed the plants.
