How to feed Onions in June to fill up with a large harvest with Large heads
Feeding for fodder plants must be selected with care, otherwise the tops may grow, and the bulb will remain small. Also, when growing onions, you need to know other secrets.
We select fertilizers correctly
Onions are very depleting of the soil. For this reason, fertilizing is recommended without fail.
The plant reacts best to mineral fertilizing. Almost completely nitrogen is absorbed. Also, onions consume about 45% of potassium, which is found in the soil. About a third of phosphorus is taken from the soil.
How do I determine if onions need feeding or not?
1. If the onion has good greens with a rich color, then the plant does not need anything. Do not cut off the green part of the plants. It is enough to add phosphorus-potassium fertilizer at the moment when the bulb is formed.
2. Little or no greenery is a sign that nitrogen is deficient in the soil.
3. Feathers begin to turn yellow, which means there is not enough potassium in the soil.
4. If the tops of the feathers begin to dry out, then the plant does not have enough phosphorus.
It is best to apply fertilizers in liquid form. Only in case of heavy rains, I bury the granules in the soil to a depth of 5 to 10 centimeters.
How to properly feed in June
At the beginning of the month (at least 30 days should pass after planting the onion in the ground) I add potassium and phosphorus. These trace elements contribute to the formation and maturation of large bulbs.
The second June feeding is done in 2-3 weeks. For 2 m2 I give 30 g of nitrate, 30 g of sodium chloride and 60 g of superphosphate. I dilute this mixture in 10 liters of water.
After the plant forms a small bulb, calcium can be added to the soil. This will help reduce the acidity of the soil and the bulbs will grow in size. The easiest way is to take the shell of five chicken eggs, insist in 3 liters of water for about 7 days and water the onion bed.
It so happens that the bulbs reach the size of a quail egg and stop growing. In this case, I dissolve 40 g of granular superphosphate in 10 liters of water and water the garden.
You can also add an infusion of ash. For 10 liters of water I give a glass of wood ash and water the garden.
What you can not feed onions in the summer
Chicken droppings, urea and manure are high in nitrogen. But organic fertilizers should be applied in the fall. In the summer, such dressings provoke excessive growth of green mass, and also attract pests.
The introduction of organic matter in June can lead to the formation of small irregularly shaped bulbs that quickly rot and cannot be stored.
It is important to know that onions are prone to nitrate buildup. Do not use excessive fertilizer. Better undershoot than overshoot.
If the solution or mixture gets on the surface of the plant, it is worth watering from a watering can to avoid burns.
