With the development of technology, we have received a new type of reinforcement, consisting of composite polymer materials. The novelty immediately divided the builders into two camps: some prefer to work the old way; others are in favor of modernization and the introduction of new, technological materials into construction. But which one is right? Is it possible to use polymer reinforcement in private housing construction, and if so, where exactly? Let's figure this out.
What builders say about composite rebar
On the forums, you can often find notes from professional builders, designers, constructors about composite reinforcement. So their opinion sounds about the same: the material is interesting, it will definitely find its place in the construction site, but we do not want to get involved with it.
This opinion has developed for one good reason. The ultimate tensile strength of a composite rod is, on average, twice that of traditional reinforcement. But the tensile modulus of fiberglass is 45 thous. MPa, and the usual 200 thousand. MPa - the difference is global!
What does it mean? And this means that the destruction of a concrete structure reinforced, for example, with fiberglass, will happen not by tensioned reinforcement, but by compressed concrete. That is, it will not leave a chance for evacuation in case of destruction. It turns out that the composite is stronger, but under extreme loads it does not stretch like a steel bar, but breaks immediately.
This implies a clear reluctance among the designers and designers of high-rise buildings to use composite reinforcement at their construction sites. It would seem that construction organizations are happy to replace steel with a cheaper composite, save on the facility, and, accordingly, earn more. But no matter how it is! Where in private housing construction it is not worth using composite reinforcement
Here, as they say, there are no comrades for taste and color, but you need to heed the advice. Everyone wants the house to be solid, reliable and durable. And for this reason, it is recommended to exclude the use of composite reinforcement in critical structural elements, namely, in foundations, ceilings, beams with large spans, that is, in those places where a bending force acts.
This can theoretically be done, but it will be extremely costly. This is due to the notorious modulus of elasticity of a composite rod, which is four times inferior to steel reinforcement. And, accordingly, to achieve the same resistance, it will be necessary to lay the composite reinforcement just four times more. Is it profitable? No!

Where can I use polymer composite rebar for private developers
With pleasure and benefit for the wallet, composite reinforcement can be used in so-called irresponsible structures.
Jumpers
The material is perfect for lintels over window, door and other small openings. There are no critical loads in these places.
Armopoyas
The use of composite reinforcement is also allowed here. In an armored belt between floors of brick or block buildings, the elastic modulus is not critical.
Floor on the ground, concrete floor, reinforced blind area, entrance lobby
In these structures, the composite will not only successfully replace steel reinforcement, but also save money. But it is necessary to calculate the number of reinforcement according to the table of equal strength replacement.
Masonry bundle
In brickwork, you can use fiberglass rods. This will increase the strength of the wall, exclude the use of metal mesh, and reduce the cost of construction.
Flexible connections
An excellent option for connecting three-layer walls will be a fiberglass rod. Fiberglass is not subject to destruction from the aggressive alkaline environment of concrete.
Other constructions
Other structures include: garden paths; strip foundation for a fence or lightweight structure; screed; and, perhaps, sites for the installation of monuments. In these cases, the composite helps out - as they say: cheap, reliable, practical!
