Where can an unpleasant smell appear in the car?
Sometimes it happens that the car emits an unusual or disgusting smell. In this case, an urgent need to determine the cause. Bad smells can lead to costly repairs or health hazards and should not be ignored.
Let's try to understand some of the common unpleasant odors in a car and their possible causes.
If a musty smell comes from the air vents when you turn on the air conditioner, there may be mold or mildew in the air conditioning system. Moisture naturally builds up in the evaporator of a cold air conditioner (a small radiator that carries refrigerant into the car dashboard through the vents), and this may cause mold. Running only the fan at high speed (with the air conditioner off) can dry out the evaporator to remove mold and odor.
However, this does not guarantee that the problem will no longer arise, especially if the odor is caused by a clogged drain tube that causes water to drip under the vehicle. Moldy odor can also be caused by carpets that get wet when water gets inside.
Sweet smell
Antifreeze has a sweet syrupy smell, and the smell of it inside the car usually means there is a leak somewhere in the cooling system. The source is not easy to find. For example, a leak can come from a corroded heat exchanger (called a heater core), which is usually located behind the dashboard.
The leak can be in the form of steam that enters the cab, producing odor and potentially fogging up the windows. This problem should be addressed quickly, because inhaling antifreeze vapors can be detrimental to health.
The smell of burning
Oil may leak onto a hot part of the engine or somewhere in the exhaust. It can also be caused by overheating of the brake pads or rotors - due to aggressive braking, pads that do not retract when the brake pedal is released, or if the emergency brake is left applied during movement.
On vehicles with a manual transmission, the clutch disc can be worn out or overheated when riding the clutch pedals. Leaves or other materials in the engine compartment can also burn on hot surfaces.
Rotten egg smell
If you smell rotten eggs or sulfur, your catalytic converter may have gone bad. The root cause could be an engine or exhaust system problem that was causing the converter to overheat, causing the smell of rotten eggs.
Burning rubber
Burning rubber odor can come from the accessory drive belt slipping or chewing on a broken pulley or hose rubbing against a moving part. An overheated clutch disc can also smell like burning rubber.
Electrician
The smell of burnt toast? This could be a short circuit in an electrical component or overheating of the insulation. Take electrical odors seriously because short circuits and overheating of components are common sources of ignition.
Gas smell
When starting a cold engine for the first time due to incomplete combustion, it smells like a little gasoline. However, if you smell gas vapors after the engine has warmed up, the gas compartment cover may be loosened or the system evaporative emission control, which must contain fuel vapors and recirculate them through the engine, may leak or clog up.
Worse, gas can leak from a tank or other part of the fuel system, such as a fuel line. Always check for the source of gas odors that you detect when your vehicle is parked before starting the engine to avoid potential fuel ignition.
The smell of rotting fruit
Examine carefully all the hidden places in the cabin. It is quite possible that it was in them that a piece of an apple or a banana, accidentally dropped by a child, remained. Be sure to clean the affected areas with a spray bottle or cleaner to get rid of any bacteria.
