I tell you why I sprinkle tomatoes in July. What is the use of this and what result do I get in the end?
Tomatoes are the closest relative of potatoes. This culture also responds well to hilling, but not every gardener resorts to such actions.
Many of them believe that this is a waste of time and energy. But in fact, hilling tomatoes often produces good results.
The advantages of hilling
· Prevention of lodging of stems of tall varieties;
· Additional roots are formed on the stem, the plant will become more powerful;
· If there is heavy rainfall, then hilling will prevent soil leaching;
· Increase in water supply in a natural way;
· In the process of hilling, weeds are additionally destroyed;
· The risk of spreading fungi and pests becomes much less;
· Strengthening of the stem;
· The soil layer becomes whiter and more breathable;
· Natural drainage to avoid root decay.
How to determine whether hilling is needed or not
In fact, a healthy plant can bear fruit without hilling. If the soil has been properly processed, and it contains all the nutrients, then the plants will thrive anyway.
If the stem has a rich green color, does not turn yellow, and there is a sufficient amount of ovary on it that does not crumble, then it is not necessary to huddle.
But, if the sprout develops very slowly, it lacks moisture or the necessary elements, then I huddle the plants in mandatory, since a lack of nutrition, oxygen and moisture often leads to plant death or lack of fruiting.
The first time the plants are spud is when white tubercles appear at the bottom of the stem. These are the beginnings of new roots. Thus, the plant makes it known that it is deficient in the necessary substances.
If these bumps are absent, then hilling will not give a good result, since the plant is not ready for such changes. A fungal disease may develop.
It is also important to know that when hilling, you cannot sprinkle the leaves, especially if they have a rich green color.
After the rows of tomatoes have closed, hilling is not carried out. In this case, mechanical damage can be caused to the plants.
Hilling stages
1. The first time I add soil around the stems two to three weeks after planting. The plant must take root and adapt. A sure sign of this is the appearance of new leaves at the top of growth.
2. The second time the procedure is performed when the surface of the stems becomes a little bluish. These are the first signs of the appearance of lateral roots.
Usually, two procedures are sufficient for tomatoes. But if the plants continue to form additional roots, then I huddle them additionally.
In any case, there is no specific time frame. It is necessary to focus on the condition of the plant, soil composition and weather conditions.
