In China, a cobalt-free battery has been developed, with a power reserve for an electric car of 880 km per charge

Work on improving storage batteries does not stop for a minute, and more and more companies from the Middle Kingdom declare serious successes.

So a Chinese company SVOLT Energy stated that they were able to create a cobalt-free battery that can guarantee the mileage of an electric car up to 880 km on one charge.

What is this company

Company SVOLT Energy, for a moment, the former subsidiary of the Chinese auto giant Great Wall Motor, has already launched a line for the production of promising batteries.

At the same time, at this stage, two types of batteries will be produced at once (so far in small batches), and starting from the second half of 2021 it will switch to full-scale production.

In this case, the first type of battery will be produced with cells with a capacity 115 A * h at an energy density of 245 W * h / kg. And these will be batteries for the widest range of vehicles.

But we are interested in the second type of storage batteries, in which there will be no cobalt.

226 A * h and will be installed exclusively on premium cars from Great Wall Motor.

It is these batteries that will provide 880 km mileage on a single charge. At the same time, the company's engineers said that the product's service life will be at least 15 years, or approximately 1.2 million. km without replacement.

What the engineers did

In order to achieve such results, the company's engineers implemented the following solutions:

The cobalt anode was replaced with a nickel anode. Also, lithium ions were replaced by nickel ions, which acted as a kind of blockers of lithium degradation processes during battery operation.

In addition, the matrix principle was used in the design of the battery. This gave the following advantage - such a battery is very easy to scale to any requirement.

The operating voltage of the battery was also increased to 4.3V - 4.35V. It was this increase in voltage that increased the stored energy density over traditional lithium-ion battery assemblies.

Of course, practice will show how the new Chinese battery will behave in reality. We just have to wait a little.
