What is the most reliable connection of copper and aluminum
So far I believe that the best way to connect copper and aluminum wires is with a bolt. Yes, a bolt with a few washers and a couple of growers will fix this issue forever. It is clear that there are other opinions on this score, which I ask you to share in the comments.
For the first time, such a solution had to be resorted to about 12 years ago, when, while cutting the strobes with a grinder (yes, it was a grinder - it was the case), he damaged the copper cable input to the apartment. After such a turn, I consulted with an experienced electrician and he suggested exactly this way out, which is being discussed here. The joint was securely wrapped in a layer of insulation and sunk deeper into the plaster.
As an example, I give a threaded connection of aluminum and stranded copper wires. To complete it, you need to find a short bolt. In my practice, most often I had to use M4-M6. Also, three identical pucks and two growers are useful.
The entire set is shown in the snapshot below. Washers can also be selected, with a slightly smaller outer diameter.
Only if you have to connect a wire with many veins to aluminum, it is better to tin it for reliability, then everything will be just perfect. Tinned wire, however, is more difficult to bend into a loop, but it's worth it.
IMPORTANT! Need to put exactly three washers, this is the only way to avoid direct contact of copper with aluminum, otherwise a galvanic pair is created, which will decay over time from corrosion.
The connection is made like this:
- the grover and the first washer are first put on the bolt;
- then the first wire bent by a ring is put on;
- a second washer is inserted, separating the wires;
- then the second wire and the third washer;
- lastly grover and nut.
We tighten the entire assembly and get this result.
The fact that the connection is ready is indicated by the fact that the growers are aligned and the washers are aligned. It turns out to be a little massive and this is perhaps the only disadvantage of such a bundle. Well, if you insulate it, then it will become even slightly larger. Although if a critical area is being repaired in this way, then you no longer look at the size of the bolt and do it.
Is this connection really as reliable as I think you would say?
