Smart meters will be installed in Russians' homes from July 1

Starting from July 1, 2020, the installation of "smart meters", intelligent electricity metering systems, began in the homes of residents of Russia. The corresponding law has already entered into force. Russian manufacturers will be the main suppliers of electricity metering devices of the new design.

Smart meter installation procedure

All intelligent electricity metering systems must be installed at the expense of power grid organizations, which will also take responsibility for maintaining the equipment. New meters will be installed in houses gradually - as old appliances fail.

Some of the meters will be replaced without the knowledge of the owners - if the devices are installed outside the home. If the electricity meter is inside the house, then you can refuse to install new devices. But in this case, you will have to pay electricity bills according to average consumption estimates. In general, the Ministry of Energy believes that the purchase and installation of such systems a person will save from 5 to 20 thousand rubles.

How it works?

The new "smart meters" will transmit data directly to the electricity supplier via available wi-fi or via a link to the home owner's SIM card. This was done primarily in order to exclude possible errors in the accounts, and also not to throw an unpaid bill for the consumption of electricity by those who are not involved, as it happened before. If a person does not pay, then the system independently limits the supply of electricity - such a fight against non-payers.

More benefits

An ordinary consumer will be able to follow the readings online or check on the device itself. Smart systems will monitor the voltage level and frequency. And remote tariff change will become available without replacing the meter.

Responsibilities of consumers

If the electricity meter is located on the consumer's territory, then the responsibility arises to monitor the safety of the device. Here the apartment owners have an advantage. In most apartment buildings, the energy supplier is responsible for the smart system. In individual homes, the appliances are usually on a private property. If the consumer breaks the metering device, he will be fined. If the device breaks down due to internal breakdown, then the bill will begin to come according to average readings until the replacement is made.

Impact on tariffs

No increase in tariffs due to the installation of modern "smart" metering devices is foreseen. You can exhale. Therefore, growth will occur exclusively in line with inflation. And the expenses incurred by the energy companies will be compensated for by the projected savings of 70–80 billion rubles a year.

The Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation assumes that almost 2.5 million metering devices will be installed by the end of 2020 (this is not only in houses, but also in apartments). It is worth noting that even if the residents refused to replace the electric meter with a new type of device, the replacement should be made by 2023. Otherwise, fines will be issued to energy companies.
