At one time, my grandfather shared the rules for determining that onions are ready for harvesting, and for some reason it seems to me that not all gardeners are familiar with this valuable information.

The first thing to pay attention to is the yellowing and lodging of the feather, which should be friendly. It is interesting that many gardeners, including myself, sometimes accelerate the maturation of the underground part of the culture by tying a feather in a knot.

The fact is that in this way it is possible to literally redirect the potential of the vital forces of the plant in the right direction.

But if the onion feather grows as it is, and the summer turned out to be cool and damp, then you can not wait at all for its lodging and yellowing. But at the same time - the turnips will ripen almost on time.

I also consider it important to note that sometimes the feather turns yellow and withers away from disease. In order not to confuse the reasons, you need to take a closer look at it.

If the changes in the above-ground part of the culture are caused only by the ripening of the turnips, then a few weeks before their full readiness, the lateral feathers become soft and fall, and then the lateral feathers dry and turn yellow. When maturity is absolute, the stem of the aerial part will flatten at the base and fall.

The second sure sign refers to the skin of the part of the bulb protruding from the ground. It should be dry and slightly flaky. Naturally, its condition must be checked in dry weather.

At the end of the topic, I want to give some tips on how to harvest onions - after all, mistakes in this serious matter are fraught with the loss of the harvest.

2 weeks before the planned harvesting period, the onions must be stopped watering. The fact is that excess moisture can reduce its keeping quality.

I used to pull the onions out of the ground carefully so as not to damage the tops. If you tear it off, then rotting of the turnip will soon begin in the damaged place.

Before the onion extracted from the beds is sent to storage, you need to cut off the tops of it, keeping 5-8 cm in length. Soon, these remnants of greenery will dry out completely. When removing dead greenery, it is important not to peel off the scales of the onion, and also not to remove its roots.

Now the onions can be put away for storage - in a dry, well-ventilated room with an air temperature as close as possible to 0 ° C.
