Which strawberry leaves I must cut off, and which
Flaming fireworks, fellow strawberry growers!
Want to harvest better strawberries next year than this one? Do not abandon the careful maintenance of the berry bed now, after the end of fruiting. Particular attention should be paid to working with mustaches and leaves. I will write about the mustache this week. And about the leaves - today. After reading the article, you will find out which leaves of strawberries must be removed and which ones must be left.
Why do anything with strawberry leaves at all
Having collected the last berries, strawberries cannot be ignored. The time comes for pruning the foliage that has become obsolete. The strawberry leaf is fully functional for 2-2.5 months. After that, it turns red, the processes of photosynthesis in it slow down. Becoming ballast, old leaves only draw nutrients from the roots.
It is not worth delaying the event; you need to prune within 2-4 months after harvesting. Strawberries should have at least two months of time to recover before the onset of cold weather.
What is cropping for:
• useless leaves with clutches of insect pests, accumulated harmful substances after chemical treatments are removed;
• conditions are created for the intensive growth of young leaf mass and the laying of fruit buds of the next year;
• plantation clearing facilitates planting density control.
Excellent, comrades, isn't it?
How to properly trim strawberries in August
Some gardeners simply mow strawberries. Cardinal pruning is only suitable for bushes over 3-4 years old, for younger plants this can be overwhelming stress.
For the event we choose a dry cloudy day. Pruning is carried out with a sharp pruner or garden shears. We disinfect the tool in a solution of potassium permanganate or wipe it with a cotton swab with alcohol.
We cut off all old and diseased leaves, especially those affected by spotting and damaged by pests. You cannot cut at the root! We leave hemp 4-6 cm, trying not to touch the middle of the outlet, where the growth point is. Do not be afraid to cut the leaves, cutting the plant gives an impulse to rejuvenation, regrowth of healthy green mass.
We also remove all the mustache. This is a rather tedious job, but they need to be cut.. Pulling out the mustache with your hands can damage the root collar of the plant.. If you plan to use layering for reproduction, it is better not to leave the mustache on the garden bed, but to transplant it into a special "school", before landing in a permanent place.
And now - about an important nuance, which many gardeners for some reason undeservedly bypass
We stimulate the growth of new leaves feeding the bush and flower buds for the next year
After processing, the weakened bushes need to be replenished with minerals. We stimulate the plant to develop young leaves using one of the types of dressings:
- Mullein or compost - you can simply spread it out between the bushes.
- Chicken droppings. We insist 1 kg of chicken in 20 liters of water, water at the rate of 1 liter per plant.
- Organo-mineral feeding. Take a glass of sifted ash and 2 tbsp. nitroammophos for 10 liters of water.
Do not forget that fertilizing with nitrogen can only be carried out until the end of July!
We support strawberries in two weeks phosphorus-potassium fertilizer. Superphosphate with potassium sulfate or wood ash is suitable. Having completed all the activities, you can be sure that the strawberry beds will look decent by the end of August. There will be no thickening, a thick bright green cap of foliage will grow on the bushes.
And in the fall you can cut it off completely?
In the fall, putting in order the site and getting rid of plant debris, some gardeners tend to cut strawberries as well. This should not be done categorically!
Pruning is stressful for the plant. Strawberries will not have time to recover before the onset of cold weather, a decrease in immunity will significantly worsen the winter hardiness of the bushes. The leaves serve as a natural shelter for the root system from frost, having lost them, the strawberries will probably freeze out.
