Why I Love Phlox: Some Practical Care Tips
In early June, it is still cool in the morning. Irises bloom on flower beds, lilies are gaining color. Phlox grows imperceptibly, rising high above the ground. By the middle of the month, the first flowers appear timidly on them.
From this moment I begin to wait for large inflorescences, similar to torches, to appear. And a subtle, sweet scent will flow through the garden, enveloping in an invisible cloud. People call him a calico. Indeed, the flower bed looks like bright canvases of chintz. What a fascinating picture it is - blooming phlox. A sea of colors is poured on the flower beds from June to September.
Why I love phlox
I do not know what varieties grow on my site. Forgive me the breeders who have come up with so many beautiful names for these amazing flowers. Not always even a specialist can accurately determine the variety.
I like phlox because they:
- long and beautiful bloom;
- have lush inflorescences and smell good;
- bloom and grow quickly after transplanting;
- easily transplanted at any time;
- do not freeze;
- unpretentious in care;
- in one place they grow up to 10 years.
How I take care of flowers
Phlox are flowers for lazy or busy gardeners. They love the sun, but they feel good in partial shade, where they bloom longer. Propagated by rhizomes.
A few practical tips for care:
1. April. As the snow melts and the soil dries up, I gently loosen the flowers, add earth and fix the flower bed. Sprinkle on top with sifted wood ash and pour 3-5 cm of rotted last year's manure. I don't do any more feeding.
2. May. When the plants grow 10-15 cm, I transplant if necessary. They tolerate a spring transplant better.
3. June. I weed two or three times during the month. By the end, the plants bloom.
4. July - August, wild flowering. I cut off the faded inflorescences.
5. End September - October. I cut the stems at ground level. I mulch with humus.
I put in such minimal work to make the phlox flower bed happy all summer season.
