5 Effective Ways to Help Save Grapes from Wasps and Bees
I got carried away with the cultivation of grapes, and when it began to work out, I decided that the sale of berries is a good increase in my salary. As a result, I decided to donate a decent plot of land for vineyards.
When I had only a few bushes, and even those in different places, I somehow did not notice the activity of insects. But when wasps and bees filled my vineyards, I was stunned!
It turns out that these little creatures are capable of causing significant damage to the crop! But this turned out to be not the only difficulty - the neighbors on the site began to get nervous - many are allergic to these "pollinators".
And, to be honest, it has become a little scary to approach the bushes - and without proper care, the harvest will be bad.
Then it was time to think about what can be done in this situation. I interviewed acquaintances, studied specialized sites, experimented and, as a result, found five methods by which you can save the harvest and at the same time get rid of pests (although I used to think that bees are helpers for gardeners).
I'll make a reservation right away - now I use all these methods in combination - they are also effective individually, but not so much.
What methods have proven to be effective?
1. Grid. I didn’t stint and bought mesh bags. I sell grapes on the market and the appearance is of great importance. Therefore, I began to put nets on the most beautiful bunches of grapes, and did not touch those that I left under the wine.
I say right away - the size of the grid should not be close to each other, otherwise the bees will still pick up the berries. Therefore, I also made spacers inside.
2. Smoke. Both types of insects are afraid of smoke. At the end of each evening, I kindled several bonfires around the perimeter of the vineyard - over time, "guests" began to look at the site less and less often.
3. Beer. Yes, wasps and bees will prefer the aroma of beer to the aroma of wine berries, but for that, it is worth adding a little sugar to the beer. I just hung special traps from plastic bottles between the bushes, and then poured out a bunch of insects that comfortably rested in a sweet beer.
4. Soda solution. I processed my grapes with this substance even during the ripening period. The recipe is very simple, and the effect is amazing - in addition to the fact that the insects have ceased to attract the aroma, the berries also became much sweeter after ripening.
5. Nest hunting. Before starting agricultural work in the vineyard, I study the territory and, if I find it, I destroy insect nests!
