The potato tops are dry. Start digging or the tubers are still growing.
In many countries, potatoes are the main vegetable crop. And this is completely understandable: as many dishes as from potatoes cannot be prepared from any known vegetable.
In this article, we will tell you about when it is time to harvest potatoes. After all, if you dig up root crops too early, then they cannot be saved until a new harvest appears.
The main sign of potato readiness for harvesting is drooping tops. When the greens begin to dry out and turn into completely dry twigs, this is a signal that it is time to start harvesting potatoes soon. But it's not that simple. Often potato tops begin to turn black and dry not because of the ripeness of the fruit, but because of the disease. In this case, it is necessary to dig up the diseased bush so that the infection does not spread to neighboring plants and does not descend to the root crops.
Recently, due to global warming, potato tops begin to dry out earlier. If once they began to dig potatoes only in mid-September, now harvesting has moved to the second half of August.
And so, when all the tops are dry, it must be mowed along with the weeds that have appeared. After a couple of days, when everything that has been cut is well dried, it must be removed from the field and burned. Potatoes should stand for at least another week, so that the roots are saturated with the necessary substances and the skin becomes rough. After all, if the skin on the potatoes is easy to remove, then the harvest will not be able to be saved.
