Do I need to remove Garlic Arrows? I tell you where and how I use them and I advise everyone
Garlic arrows are nothing more than reproductive organs. The air bulbs that form on them can then be used for planting.
However, summer residents often propagate garlic with teeth, this method is more productive. To prevent the inflorescences from wasting nutrients from garlic, it is better to remove the arrows.
Timing of Removing Garlic Arrows
I remove the garlic arrows as soon as they start to bend. This simple technique increases the size and weight of the heads by a third.
I know gardeners who remove the flowering shoot at the very beginning of its appearance. However, in this case, the arrow will continue to grow and after a while it will have to be cut off again.
In order not to carry out the procedure twice, it is better to do this a little later, when the flowering shoots reach a length of 10-15 cm. You cannot pull out the arrows, otherwise you can partially pull the head itself out of the ground, and the roots will be damaged.
Better to do this with a tool. I usually use scissors or a utility knife, cutting off the arrow so that a 1cm stump remains.
I carry out this manipulation on a dry, clear day in the morning. Until the evening, the wounds have time to heal, which means that the risk of infection entering the plant is minimal.
How You Can Use Garlic Arrows
I use cut shoots in two ways. You can prepare a natural insecticide from them, which scares away aphids, spider mites and other pests from planting.
I chop the arrows with a knife until I have a 0.5-liter can. Then I transfer the raw materials into a 3-liter jar and fill it up to the top with warm water.
The composition should be properly infused, so I put it in a dark place for 5-6 days, and then filter it. A concentrated infusion is obtained. Before use, I dilute it in a ratio of 1 glass to 10 liters of water and add 2 tbsp. spoons of liquid soap.
The soapy component in the composition allows the infusion to better adhere to plant leaves, which provides longer lasting protection from insects.
I process the plants so that the composition must fall on the underside of the leaves, where pests are most often hiding. I spray the plantings in the morning or in the evening, you can do it in cloudy weather.
If the insects have not disappeared, I repeat the spraying after a week. With this product, my crop is always safe.
You can also use garlic arrows in cooking. They enrich the taste of any dish and are also an excellent vitamin supplement. I fry arrows, stew, pickle, add to vegetable salads.
To make a seasoning for different dishes, I first scroll the herbs in a meat grinder, add salt and oil, and store them in the refrigerator. You can also freeze arrows and use them in winter.
