At the beginning of August, it's time to make the most important feeding of Blackcurrant for gorgeous fruiting in the next Year
In order to get a good harvest of black currant next year and at the same time not suffer and shake over it from the very early spring, fertilizing the bushes must be carried out already in August of the current of the year. At this time, the shrub stops bearing fruit and needs to stock up on nutrients for the future.
I, basically, during this period use purchased mineral fertilizers for feeding currants. It seems to me that this is the easiest way.
And my neighbor in the country only recognizes organic additives. At the same time, we both get a wonderful harvest.
Top dressing with ready-made mineral ingredients
Before starting any kind of top dressing near black currant bushes, it is necessary to remove all weeds, loosen and shed the soil.
Before the onset of autumn, black currant bushes need mineral fertilizing containing phosphorus and potassium. The former increase the endurance of the culture, and the latter contribute to the accumulation of building material in the cells of the plant to maintain and improve its roots.
To make a nutrient solution, I dilute a tablespoon of superphosphate and potassium sulfate in 10 liters of water and spill the prepared soil under the currant bushes with the resulting top dressing (about 15 liters per bush).
Organic food
My neighbor has been successfully using several types of organic fertilizers for a long time:
1. Cow dung
She dilutes completely rotted cow manure with water in a ratio of 1/4 and waters each black currant bush with 10 liters of this solution.
However, the neighbor believes that it is not advisable to apply such fertilizer annually, and it is better to alternate it with some other organic fertilizing.
2. Wood ash
In order to obtain fertilizer from wood ash, rich in both phosphorus and potassium, my friend at the country house mixes the ashes of coniferous and deciduous trees. Prepares a solution consisting of 10 liters of oxen and 1 liter of ash, and pours it over the soil under the currant bushes (3 liters per bush).
3. Peeling potatoes
My neighbor prepares an infusion of potato peel by pouring it with warm water in a 1/2 ratio. Then he gives the top dressing five days to infuse, stirring it several times a day. She waters the moistened ground under each bush with about 6 liters of the resulting infusion.
We try to carry out any procedures for fertilizing black currants exclusively in the evening in cool and dry weather.
Of course, everyone chooses for himself the most convenient and favorite way of feeding black currant bushes. But both my version and the methods of my neighbor have proven their effectiveness in practice. At least, in the conditions of our summer cottage village.
