Cuttings of Currants in August. Best Time and 100% Survival
Cutting currants is the simplest, but at the same time, an effective way to propagate berry bushes. The best time for this manipulation is August. So rather study my recommendations and get down to business.
Every year in the last summer month I cut my currants, and therefore, believe me, I have something to tell you about this procedure. I must say right away that there is nothing difficult in grafting, you just need to observe some nuances and you will certainly succeed. Now I will tell you everything.
Preparatory activities
For cutting currants in August, I prefer to take young green, slightly lignified shoots with high elasticity.
It is recommended to harvest shoots on a cloudy day, in the early morning. I cut currant cuttings using a special, well-sharpened grafting knife.
In the absence of such a tool, you can take a kitchen knife, but it is better to refrain from using a pruner.
Features of harvesting cuttings
It is necessary to cut the cuttings in such a way that they are not less than 15 and not more than 20 cm in length. In this case, there should be from three to five full-fledged buds on the shoot.
When cutting the lower shoots, it is required to retreat from the lower buds of 7 cm, while the cut must be made at an angle. As for the upper sections, they should be straight and located above the upper buds, at a distance of 3 cm.
Selecting and preparing a landing site
For planting currant cuttings, I choose a lighted place, protected from the winds.
When preparing the soil, I carry out the following activities:
· I remove the surface of the soil with a layer of about 20 cm;
· At the bottom I spread the drainage (15 cm), which will be crushed stone;
· On top of the rubble, I lay a layer of fine-grained river sand;
· Water the prepared bed abundantly.
Planting seedlings
I treat the lower parts of the shoots with the preparation "Kornevin", which is designed to accelerate root formation. I send cuttings to a permanent place in early autumn, when they get stronger.
I place the seedlings in the ground at an angle of 45 degrees, deepening them by 5 cm, and then water them abundantly. I cover each shoot with a plastic bottle, creating the effect of a greenhouse.
I remove the container when the first leaves appear, which signify the successful survival and adaptation of the cuttings.
It's so simple and easy to propagate currants by cuttings. Try it and I have no doubt that you will succeed.
