How to extend the fruiting of cucumbers in the garden until October.
Cucumbers can be found in every vegetable garden, even the smallest. How we look forward to the first cucumber and how we want this tasty and healthy vegetable to bear fruit as long as possible. But unfortunately, already in August, the leaves of cucumbers begin to dry up and you can forget about crispy greens.
What can be done to prolong the fruiting period of cucumbers?
Experienced gardeners advise you to follow some rules, thanks to which you will have green crispy cucumbers on your table all summer and early autumn. Maybe the second harvest will not be so plentiful, but for salads and food, cucumbers will definitely be enough.
Here are the most basic points to help your cucumbers extend their life:
First, don't let the cucumber grow too large. Overgrowths are not only not suitable for harvesting for the winter, but they also take too many nutrients from the plant, depriving you of hope for long-term fruiting of your favorite vegetable crop.
Secondly, it is important to rejuvenate cucumbers. It is very simple to do this: you just need to remove the yellow and dried leaves, opening access to the sun, which cucumbers love so much. Damaged foliage only interferes with the normal development of the plant and shades it.
Air circulation plays an important role in preventing the development of various diseases. By removing the extra leaves, you give the cucumbers the opportunity to develop and grow in full force.
Thirdly, it is necessary to increase the root system of cucumbers. This is very simple to do: the stem should be laid on the ground and sprinkled with soil in several places, and then watered.
In places of close contact with the ground, roots should soon appear, providing additional nutrition and allowing the fruit to grow and develop with renewed vigor.
Fourthly, provide the plant with sufficient nutrients. Cucumbers, like any other vegetable crops, need regular feeding. They can be both root and foliar, which additionally protect cucumbers from diseases.
The simplest and most affordable root dressing: mullein and wood ash are poured with 10 liters of water and then cucumbers are poured with this solution. Such feeding can be done once a week.
Cucumbers should be sprayed with a urea solution (15 g per 10 liters of water).
And finally, mulching. To protect the plant from the first night frosts, you can mulch them with peat or chopped up with straw. The mulch layer should be at least 5 cm.
