Scientists have learned to generate clean fuels from light, water and carbon dioxide
The new technology for creating "artificial leaves" is capable of radically turning over all modernized energy. Indeed, with the help of them (leaves), you can get environmentally friendly fuel literally from the air.
So a scientific group from Cambridge has been successfully working on this problem for a long time. Their latest development is a fully self-contained photocatalyst plate that converts light, water and carbon into clean fuels.
As recently as last year, scientists managed to obtain an "artificial leaf" that successfully transformed light and water into fuel - synthetic gas, which consisted of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. In this case, perovskide photocells were used.
Already this year, the same research group replaced the perovskite elements with new photocatalysts, which were placed in a semiconducting powder plate.
This resulted in a plate with a total area of 20 square centimeters, which began to transform sunlight and carbon dioxide with water into oxygen and formic acid, which is immediately suitable as a liquid fuel or can be stored for further production of hydrogen from it.
This method of converting carbon into clean fuel is now ready for full scale-up and commercial use, the scientists said.
After all, it is quite easy to produce such plates with an area of several square meters. And the components used in production are widespread and cheap.
So, it is already possible to implement full-fledged stations for transforming the energy of light, water and carbon into clean fuel with the necessary funding. But the scientists didn't stop there.
Now the scientific group is working on increasing the efficiency of the installation and further modernization. It is planned to test new catalysts to obtain other types of clean fuels.
So maybe soon we will see new "leaves" that will be able to produce other types of clean fuels.
