Fiery salute, comrades rose growers!
Do you want to see your garden fragrant and bright? Pay some attention to the September care of roses, helping them recuperate and aiming the queen of flower beds for the winter without loss.
A note from my rose garden
This summer, after a warm winter, roses delighted us more than ever. One abundant wave of flowering replaced another, some varieties were covered with fertile inflorescences all summer. Even the neighbors admired and came to be photographed. Many said that in a white way they envy me! But everything is coming to an end and now is the time to help the bushes recover from a serious load.
I would be glad to see photos of your roses in the comments under the article. I am sure many readers have something to brag about. Don't be greedy, share your beauty with others 🌹
I decided to write some tips for rose growers, tested on personal experience. How many books and sites have been re-read, how many videos have been viewed...
But from all the variety of information, I have identified 4 main points of September care for bush roses.Pruning a rose after flowering: giving the plant strength
The first step is to trim. The rose forms rather large fruits that pull off significant forces of the perennial. If you are not a breeder and your plans do not include collecting seeds, prune wilted flowers as early as possible.
Comrades, distract the plant from the ideas of reproduction, let it channel resources to strengthen immunity, develop the root system and form flower buds next year. Delete at the same time thin, diseased and broken shoots, help the bush to maintain its decorative effect.
Cleanliness is the key to not only health, but also the beauty of a home rose garden
Continue weeding and loosening at the end of the season.
Weeds not only extract nutrients from the soil, but also create obstacles for ventilation. And this is a direct path to the spread of fungal diseases.
Loosening the soil is important in any weather: frequent rains create a crust that prevents the roots from breathing; during drought, loosening prevents rapid evaporation of moisture.
Be sure to remove from the ground at the same time fallen leaves and petals. They can harbor fungi, bacteria and pests that attack the rose in summer. It was not enough for the parasites to hibernate together with their favorite plants!
A few words about mulch
Have you tried using mulch? This technique solves several problems at once: eliminates loosening and weeding, makes it possible to carry out less watering, serves as food for the plant.
By being creative and using crushed bark or cork as a mulching material, you can find new interesting solutions in the design of your rose garden. Have you tried mulching roses? Please write about your impressions in the comments.
Roses are liked not only by humans, but also by pests
Take a close look at your rose bushes, fellow gardeners. If they show signs of spots, rust or powdery mildew, spray the bushes with a 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid.
It is better, of course, not to wait for this, but to carry out regular preventive treatments with Fitosporin. The preparation, consisting of beneficial bacteria and humates, in addition to biofungicidal properties, improves the structure of the soil. Personally, I spray roses every two weeks for the entire growing season and it seems to me that in addition to protecting against diseases, plants become stronger and grow better.
A few words about fertilizing: how I fertilize a rose in September
Having given a lot of energy to flowering, roses are experiencing an acute deficiency of minerals and trace elements. It is our duty to solve this problem as soon as possible. The best way to help the plant recover and prepare for wintering is by alternating root and foliar feeding..
Add phosphorus-potassium fertilizers under the root: potassium monophosphate or superphosphate (do not forget to soak it in hot water) with potassium sulfate. The fact is that you need to feed with a diluted fertilizer so that it takes effect faster.
My second recipe is "folk", without chemicals:
Excellent foliar feeding - ash solution. Wood ash is a source of the main elements potassium and phosphorus. In addition, organic matter contains calcium and sodium salts, magnesium compounds. The method of spraying on foliage allows the rose to instantly assimilate nutrients.
Solution preparation. In the evening, 2 tbsp. pour the sifted ash with a liter of boiling water, wrap it up and leave to infuse overnight. After about 12 hours, bring the volume of liquid to 10 liters and apply top dressing. Spray the plant in the morning or on cloudy weather. Running an event under the scorching rays of the sun will do more harm than good. The only effect of this procedure is to burn the leaf plates.
