How I cut Currants in September and get Double the berries next year. Tips that will be useful to all Summer residents
Currant is my favorite berry. Every year I take care of her like a small child, and she makes me happy with delicious berries. As a gardener, I am concerned about the health of my plantings and their full return.
I know one secret how you can cut a bush in the fall and next summer it will have a huge harvest.
The principle of rejuvenating the currant bush
Over the years, currants build up old branches, so it is necessary to get rid of them. There is little benefit from them, the berries become smaller on them, and they take moisture from young shoots.
My black currant bushes are growing by 3 years old. Then it's time to renew the bushes. For other varieties of currants (red, white, yellow), the timing can be shifted up to 5 years, since the lignification of the branches is slower.
The process of removing everything unnecessary for me begins in September. Although it is possible in the spring, there is a risk of being late, because the currants begin to flow early.
I perform sanitary and formative pruning at one time. In old specimens, I remove branches with cracked, dark bark, and at the very root.
I leave only healthy shoots without curvatures, growths and other pathologies. I prune every autumn and my bushes are always in excellent condition.
Attention. And here is my main secret: in order to increase the yield, you need to cut off the tops of the fruiting branches.
This is necessary so that all the juices are concentrated in the middle part of the bush, where the largest number of berries are laid. Cut with a sharp secateurs, 4-5 centimeters, no more.
Pruning terms in different regions of Russia
Middle Volga region - September
Siberia - mid September
Ural - September-early October
Central areas - end of September
Southern regions - end of September, November
I define the exact time as follows: if almost all the leaves have flown from the bush, then you can start pruning.
Tools
The following tools will help to carry out the correct pruning:
1. Pruner. For medium to thin branches.
2. Garden knife. It is good for them to cut thin shoots.
3. A hacksaw with fine teeth. For removing thick knots.
4. Brush cutter. It will help to cope with old, powerful branches.
Be sure to cover the cut site with garden pitch so that infection does not penetrate there.
Such a simple work in September will provide an excellent currant harvest. I wish you success and warm days!
