How I propagate Phlox by cuttings and get the Most Beautiful Plants without any hassle. Step-by-step instruction
Delicate and fragrant phloxes adorn the garden all summer long and in order to preserve them for the next year, even increase their magnificence, one should think about their reproduction in the fall.
My choice is grafting. Having studied a little scientific and botanical literature, I understood how to do it correctly, getting gorgeous flowers without any problems!
And I think many growers may need step-by-step recommendations!
First of all, you need to choose a suitable day - dry, but not sunny. This feature of phlox is that they do not tolerate propagation by cuttings with an abundance of light. So even a new place should be shaded for the first few days.
Garden shears for cutting cuttings must be disinfected, at least with ordinary alcohol. It is categorically contraindicated to extract cuttings by hand, breaking off the shoots!
Naturally, cuttings can only be taken from healthy phloxes that are not seriously affected by diseases and pests this season.
For autumn cuttings, I choose shoots, each of which has 3 nodes.
The composition of the soil is of great importance for phlox survival. It should be fertile and loose enough. The ideal option is obtained by mixing 75% loamy soil with 25% leaf humus or semi-decomposed horse manure.
Based on personal experience, I also advise you to mix a little ash on the area allotted for phlox cuttings - it does not only contains minerals valuable for them, that is, potassium and calcium, but also provides the prevention of dangerous fungal diseases.
Prepared cuttings of phlox should be "lodged" in the garden on the same day. You can, perhaps, put them in a jar of water with the addition of a growth stimulator for a couple of hours - for better and faster rooting.
And then - you can plant them. At the same time, it is important to observe the correct angle of the handle relative to the soil - 45 °.
The root system even in adult phloxes is shallow - from 4 to 12 cm in the ground. Therefore, it is very important to plant the cuttings in well-loosened and moist soil, since the possibilities for "fixing" them in it are very limited.
Freshly planted cuttings should be mulched with fallen leaves, needles or sawdust. And this is necessary so that they are not destroyed by frost. Plus, you should cover delicate plants with plastic wrap from above.
