How to make a metal front door yourself, the choice of material, the stages of work
After I completed the basement and covered the first floor of my house with reinforced concrete slabs, I had the opportunity to leave a concrete mixer and other tools at the construction site.
To ensure their safety, he decided to install an entrance door, which could be heavy, resistant to physical and mechanical stress, fireproof. After examining the range of door designs presented in the outlets of my city, I was disappointed with the too high cost. That is why I decided to make the door myself, saving a decent amount of money.
I divided the entire workflow into several stages:
- In order to give rigidity to the door leaf, I purchased a metal corner and created a rectangular frame from it.
- Inside the workpiece, by welding, I fixed one fragment of the same corner, thus creating an additional stiffener. He placed it in the center of the structure, vertically.
- For the door leaf, I used a sheet of metal with a thickness of 3 mm.
- I installed a box from the corner inside the doorway. For better fixation, I connected it to brick walls with reinforcement. I inserted it into the holes created by the puncher and welded it to the box.
- I glued a seal around the perimeter of the door frame.
- Before installing the door in the place where I welded the hinges, I processed all the metal elements with a primer mixture. Its function is to prevent the development of corrosive changes.
During all the work, I prepared holes for the lock structure in the box and door leaf. I also installed it myself, following the factory instructions.
In the future, I plan to install a decorative overlay on the outer part of the door, imitating the structure of a natural solid wood, and insulate and sheathe the inside.
