Sedum or sedum has been cultivated by people since ancient times. Charlemagne also forced his subjects to sow sedum on the roof. He believed that this plant protects buildings from lightning strikes. The plant was rubbed on the cheeks so that they acquired a natural glow.

Features of sedum

The plant does not require any special care. Sedum withstands drought, winter frost and summer heat. Watering the bush is necessary only in severe drought.

Sedum must be weeded often, otherwise weeds will displace it from the flower bed. Many types of stonecrop cannot compete in this and quickly give up their positions.

In nature, there are almost 300 species. But mainly Aversa sedum is grown. This is an evergreen grass, young shoots of which are red-brown in color, but towards autumn they gradually acquire a grayish-brown hue.

Small pinkish flowers are collected in dense corymbose inflorescences, leaves are rounded bluish-green in color. However, closer to autumn, the leaves gradually turn pinkish-crimson.

Then sedum looks very colorful for the autumn palette. The plant grows up to 20 cm. It grows very slowly.

Reproduction

Lignified sedum shoots do not die off in winter, and already in April they form a compact pillow. The plant reproduces on its own.

The tops and peduncles fall off and take root in the soil themselves. If desired, the plant can be easily transplanted to another place.

For reproduction in June, you can cut cuttings from the tops of the bush and root them anywhere in the garden. Then, in the fall, young plants can bloom.

Application

This perennial plant can be used as a planting crop. Sedum survives where other plants die. Sedum is resistant to fungal and viral infections.

But in rainy weather, the loose tops of the leaves wither, then they need to be removed.

Planting

Sedum grows well even on poor soil. But the leaves will acquire a brighter color if the bush is planted in the sunniest place of the garden plot with fertile and sun-warmed soil.

It is also desirable that groundwater does not lie close. It is useful to apply mineral and organic fertilizers when planting, so that it is easier for the roots to adapt to new conditions. It is best to replant the bush in the spring, when the soil warms up well.

Rejuvenation

1. Old plants can be rejuvenated by simple division, you just need to make sure that buds remain on each division.
2. To rejuvenate an adult bush, you will have to cut off the old and thin stems, shorten the remaining ones and pour humus or rotted compost to the base of the plant.

To preserve its decorative effect, sedum must be rejuvenated after 4-5 years.

Healing properties

With sedum, you can remove warts, heal wounds, and reduce pain. Sedum leaves have anti-inflammatory and hemostatic properties.

The plant sap is used to lubricate burns, cuts, cuts, frostbite, helps with sore joints.

According to the indicators of biological activity, its juice is even better than a preparation based on aloe.
