How I Prepare Clematis for Winter. Take care of the plants Correctly and they will thank you with Unprecedented flowering
Clematis are one of my favorite garden plants. A magnificent liana with fragrant flowers not only decorates the site, but also has a positive effect on health.
In order for this perennial culture to always delight the eyes and bloom for a long time, it is necessary to properly care for it. And then the plant will not only survive the cold, but it will bloom magnificently the next year.
In this article I will tell you how I prepare clematis for winter. I hope my little experience and knowledge will help novice growers.
Basic rules of care
I begin to prepare the plant for the winter season at the very beginning of autumn. First of all, it is necessary to abandon nitrogen fertilizers in order to stop the growth of the plant. And feed the crop with various fertilizers.
1. Fertilizer
As a top dressing, I use phosphorus-potassium fertilizers to strengthen the plant before the winter season. (200 grams of bone meal per 1 square meter) Or a mixture of ash and river sand in equal proportions.
2. Watering
Always water the plant. Only in the middle of autumn, when it rains often, you can moderate watering, and stop when there is frost. I water in the morning and in the evening, trying to thoroughly saturate the mail.
It is impossible that water gets on the leaves, fungal diseases may develop. After each watering, I work the soil so that the soil is softer and absorbs moisture well.
3. Pruning
As soon as the temperature drops to +10 degrees, you need to do pruning. Much depends on the age and type of culture.
For example, I cut a one-year-old vine almost to the very root, and leave 3-4 buds on the stump. If there are diseased parts of the plant, then I remove them along with the old leaves.
You can use a universal trimming method. For example, divide the lashes of the bush into 3 parts: cut the first short, the second at a height of about 1 meter, and shorten the third a little.
Prevention of fungal diseases
I apply it immediately after pruning the plant and use antifungal drugs for this:
- 1% Bordeaux liquid;
- 3% ferrous sulfate;
- the drug Fundazol.
When the cold weather is finally established, you need to cover the plant. You cannot open clematis until warming occurs, otherwise the vine will die.
If you carry out all these simple events, then next spring clematis will again delight you with their luxurious flowering.
