Correct pruning of an apple tree in autumn
Everyone knows that it is impossible to grow a garden without proper care. The apple tree is no exception. If you want to harvest a rich apple crop, do not forget about the autumn pruning.
This simple procedure not only affects the formation of the tree crown, but also prevents the development of diseases.
To care for the garden, you will need some tools:
- garden hacksaw (it looks like a saber with a panel narrowed towards the end and with special holes through which sawdust spills out, and does not accumulate, interfering with work);
- an ordinary pruner and an air pruner, which is used if it becomes necessary to trim the upper branches;
- stepladder.
How to properly prune in the fall?
Pruning is best done in late September or early October when the weather is still warm. If you did not have time to prune branches in the fall, you can do it in early spring.
Pruning is formative and healing.
In order for the crown of the tree to form correctly, the upper branches should be shortened no more than 40 cm from the trunk.
All branches, except 3-5 skeletal ones, are completely removed. The central shoot must be cut 20 cm higher than the skeletal branches.
Revitalizing pruning is done on older trees to rejuvenate the tree. To do this, cut off old dry shoots that no longer bear fruit.
When removing vertical branches, they are cut at an angle of approximately 45 degrees.
After removing the branches, be sure to treat the cuts with garden pitch to protect the tree from infection.
All trimmed branches should be removed from the garden and must be burned to prevent the spread of diseases to other trees.
If you take proper care of fruit trees, then a rich fruit harvest is guaranteed.
