Fiery fireworks, fellow flower growers!

Want to paint your lot with bright islands of beautiful flowers without the hassle? I will surprise someone, but you can get to work right now, after harvesting. Let me present you with a list of the most beautiful, in my opinion, annuals, suitable for sowing for the winter.

Features of autumn planting of annual flowers: rules exist to be broken

The traditional tenets of floriculture dictate that you pick up seed bags and containers of soil in late winter or early spring months. "Lazy" technology suggests sowing annuals directly into the soil when it warms up. True, in the latter case, you will have to wait longer for flowering. But there is also a third way - to plant flowers in October.

  • Seeds planted before winter will start growing right awayhow nature will give you favorable conditions. Not early, not too late.
  • Winter cold is a tool natural stratification. Surely you, comrades, have read the tips for putting seed bags in the refrigerator. When sowing before winter, nature will do everything by itself. It has been noticed that stratified seeds show an enviable germination rate, and plants from them develop quickly and are resistant to stress (for example, to the vicissitudes of the weather).

Annuals whose seeds have lain under the snow for the winter will bloom earlier than those sown in May in the open ground
  • After all, sowing in the fall saves spring time significantly. And it is sometimes worth its weight in gold for summer residents! The main thing is to decide in advance on the location of flowering plantings.

But we must prepare for the fact that the flow of melt water will mix the seeds in the ground. Perhaps the seedlings will be chaotic: young shoots will have to be thinned out or transplanted into spontaneous voids. Therefore, this sowing option is not suitable for those who strictly follow the ideal geometry of the flower bed. But ideal for connoisseurs of natural, mischievous plantings!

Openwork aquilegia bushes: harmony of patterned greenery with unusual flowers

Thanks to the breeders who bred such wonderful specimens.

In aquilegia (popular name - "Vodosbor") everything is perfect. From spreading leaves of intricate shape to the wonderful curve of sharp tips of petals.

As a child, I was sure that it was on "Vodosbor" in our country house that elves live. Moreover, not only variegated new varieties have charm, but also almost wild varieties with an ingenuous, monochromatic color:

I really like the way drops sparkle in the depressions of the leaves after the rain

A pleasant bonus to the attractive appearance of "Vodosbor" is its amazing unpretentiousness. Aquilegia is an ornamental plant that almost does not need care (except for watering in the heat). In the villages, you can often see its bushes, towering among the thickets of weeds. Therefore, the "catchment" will definitely not take a lot of your work.

Viola is a modest flower that attracts all attention at the end of spring

"Pansies" are dwarf ladies who enliven any flower beds and paths with their positive look. Just plant them as a border. Next year, you will see how your site has sparkled with bright colors since spring.

The only requirement of a humble viola is good lighting. Even on the poorest soils "Pansies" will show themselves in all their glory, if they are warmed by the sun. The time of active flowering of viols is traditionally in the spring and early summer. Give her another flower from the list to accompany her - and the flower bed will be beautiful all season.

Alyssum marine, aka lobularia: the record holder for the duration of lush flowering

Do you like floral carpets, behind which you can hardly see not only the earth, but even the leaves? And if the "colorful blanket" also smells good? Be sure to try sowing lobularia, comrades! I grew this flower and it bloomed up to and including frost. And not on the last gasp, but in full measure of decorativeness.

2 colors of alyssum are common: lilac and white

Alyssum marine is an unpretentious ground cover, growing in the distant past on rocks near the Mediterranean Sea. He humbly endures the bright sun. Therefore, feel free to plant a flower in open areas where the sun beats down annual sissies.

Alyssum blooms in 40-50 days after germination. This means that you can admire it already in June

Marigolds: flower bed kings who need no introduction

There is no need to talk about the unpretentiousness of the marigolds. Every experienced florist is familiar with her. They grow everywhere: in the sun, in partial shade, under trees. But, receiving the sun's rays, they grow more magnificently and form more fiery buds.

I want to draw your attention: in addition to the rejected marigolds we are used to, there are unusual thin-leaved marigolds. This is a different kind. They do not have lush flowers, but they have an attractive shape of lush pillows (scroll through the gallery):

If you, comrades, still like the rejected traditional marigolds, I advise you to take undersized varieties for sowing. They have a shorter growing season. This means that the fiery bloom will begin even earlier.

Kosmeya: when one step from hatred to love

I do not understand why many growers spit in the direction of the cosmos. Say, the whole vegetable garden has flooded with self-seeding. But to prevent this from happening, it is enough to simply cut off wilted flowers with seed pods. What could be easier!

Cosmos look attractive as delicate islands and at the head of shorter flowers
All flowers listed here are self-propagating. They survive the winter frosts in the soil practically without loss and sprout with spring warmth. Otherwise, they simply could not be sown in the fall.

But how beautifully pastel daisies sway, surrounded by openwork foliage. It is ideal for decorating fences, compost heaps and outbuildings.

Nasturtium - Fire Garden Carpet

Another ground cover suitable for planting for the winter is nasturtium. A popular annual with bright flowers and leathery, rounded leaves.

I regret to notice that nasturtium is losing its former popularity

The main feature of nasturtium for me lies not even in its appearance, but in its ability to look decent in Spartan conditions: without fertilizing, in the bright sun and with respite from watering.

Phlox Drummond: my favorite bright stars

I fell in love with Drummond's phlox in my friend's garden, and the next year, without a shadow of a doubt, planted it in mine. See how fun they look:

Variants of colors and shapes are diverse.

Annuals sow before winter when persistent cold weather sets in (3-10 ° C), slightly sprinkling with soil. My sowing time coincides with the planting of winter garlic. And what flowers do you sow before winter or who pleases you with self-sowing?
