Happy reading to each of you!

And again a fiery, now October, fireworks, fellow flower growers!

Ornamental plants in our flower beds have tried their best, and now they are preparing for a well-deserved rest - winter sleep. We, in turn, can thank the miners with full-fledged autumn care. ANDthe highlight on the cake of October-November gardening work will be the pruning of perennials.

I will write about the main testaments of effective pruning, which will really benefit our flowers. And I will list the types of plants that really need a late "haircut".

The benefits of pruning perennials in autumn: let's look from all sides

"Why waste your time when the garden is almost asleep?" - the inquisitive mind of the florist may ask a question. I will give 3 arguments that at one time convinced of the need to prune some perennials before winter.

My country phloxes are saying hello to you. I don't know the name of the variety. And is it really necessary?

Those who want to grow a truly beautiful garden should remember:

plant health is above all! It may seem to a person that a pale bloom of powdery mildew on paniculate phlox does not spoil the general appearance of the flower bed. But a sick phlox will never give out such a fragrant cap of flowers that it could give to the owner, provided there are no ailments.

By sending stems with leaves under the snow, a reckless gardener with his own hands creates conditions for the life of microscopic but harmful fungi. For example, all kinds of rot, because of which the plant may not wake up at all in the spring. Therefore, in the list of plants that must be pruned before winter, there are flowers that, by their nature, are susceptible to fungal diseases.

Even in perennials, which are not recommended to be cut for the winter, all leaves and affected stems must be removed in the fall.
All lilies on my site must go under the pruner

If you, comrades, like me, are the owners of beautiful lilies, then you probably cut flowers into bouquets. And they saw that the stems looked like a tube with an empty core.

During the autumn rains, cold water can get into the inner cavity of the lily shoot and twist things. Having reached the bulb, moisture will lead to rotting. So plants in the spring can be missing!

I used to collect a collection of iris varieties, but now I have cooled down a little to these flowers.

The "lazy" gardener reasons like this: "Why prune the plants now, if by spring the shoots will rot and it will be easier to remove them?" But in the spring there is even more work in the garden than in October-November. By pruning perennial flowers now, we save valuable springtime.

Some plants are even prepared for owners who are delaying the time of pruning, an unpleasant surprise. Take, for example, some types of irises: in the spring their leaves become fibrous, and not in any way pliable, as the gardener expects. And the stems of helenium generally begin to resemble stiff wire.

The fear of my garden. I think who grew loosestrife will understand

Dried stems peeking out of the snow and swaying in the wind do not look very aesthetically pleasing. Perennials left for the winter without pruning will turn a well-groomed garden into a branch of an industrial wasteland.

How to prune perennials for the winter: just 2 rules

In order not to harm the plant, you need to wait until life processes stop going on in it. Their natural moderator is, of course, our famous Russian cold. If you notice that the leaves are hanging with rags and the bush looks shabby, then it's definitely time. Some plants are "encrypted" and look crisp to the last, but night frosts will tell the gardener the date of the haircut.

A good example of the correct pruning of a peony

Do not overdo it, comrades, and cut your hair to zero. Leave stumps 3-5 cm high to trap snow above the roots and serve as a natural shelter from frost.

To prune lilies, as well as other tubular plants, you need to choose a time without rain in the next 3-4 days. Indian summer is ideal for a responsible procedure
