Graphene face masks created in China
Hello dear guests and subscribers of my channel. Today I want to tell you about a rather curious novelty, namely, a protective face mask created using graphene.
According to the developers, this product has a very high degree of protection against viruses and all thanks to the unique properties of graphene.
Who created graphene masks and why
So, the developers of the new mask were the research group of the City University of Hong Kong. At the same time, according to the university representatives themselves, the antibacterial effectiveness of their masks was at the level of 80%. At the same time, it can be increased to an absolute result of 100% with solar exposure for 10 minutes.
How laser helped convert other materials to graphene
This development became possible thanks to the scientific work of Dr. Ye, who for several years was engaged in the study and development of technology for obtaining graphene by laser-induced various surfaces.
So, in the course of numerous experiments, it was found that a direct effect on carbon-containing polyimide films (polymer plastic with increased thermal resistance) with a special infrared CO2 laser capable of creating a three-dimensional porous graphene.
The graphene obtained in this way began to be called an induced laser.
The idea to use graphene as a material for masks did not arise out of nowhere. After all, graphene has quite pronounced antibacterial properties.
Graphene mask tests and first results
After the graphene masks were obtained in this way, they were tested. So it was found that the antibacterial effectiveness was 82%. The check was made with E. coli.
For comparison. The efficiency of the material that is usually used for the production of masks is approximately 9%. The difference is quite tangible.
How this high efficiency is demonstrated is not yet reliably known. There is only an assumption that graphene somehow damages the membrane of bacterial cells, and they are destroyed due to dehydration (but this is just one version).
Currently, the scientific group continues to study the possibility of using graphene in masks and increasing its efficiency up to 100%.
The laboratories are also working on a mechanism to simplify and reduce the cost of the production process and further commercial use of the development.
Scientists shared the results of the study on the pages of a scientific journal ACS NanoThe article is titled: Self-Assessment and Rapid Killing of Bacteria with Photo Thermal Amplification on a Laser-Induced Graphene Mask.
