And metal tiles are different. Examples from builders
It would seem that metal tiles are the roofing material that has the greatest durability, and you still need to manage to mount it incorrectly. You need to be more puzzled about the under-roof cake made of films and crate. But there are examples that say that savings in purchase and improper installation will lead to a complete roof reconstruction. As they say, the best example is someone else's experience. And how not to do it is an example that warns against possible mistakes.
Let's start with an example, when after some time the polymer coating peels off the surface of the sheets:
It is clear that low-quality metal tiles are shown. But why did this happen and what you need to know in order not to get one? When buying, the price may alert. Or you need to purchase from time-tested companies. The fact is that the production of metal tiles by cold rolling is not difficult. It is difficult to produce painted steel for this.
There are a number of large manufacturers of rolled metal products on the market, including non-ferrous ones. Roofing sheets are stamped from their products by various companies. But rolled metal can be purchased without painting. In powder coating booths in their shops, paint in the color desired by the customer. And this is where the game begins with layers and their thickness.
Painted roofing metal has such layers. Take one or two away - the material will become cheaper, but its service life will be greatly reduced. For example, zinc consumption when applying an anti-corrosion layer: from 140 g / m2 to 275 g / m2. It is considered optimal 180 g / m2. Nobody will say about this. And even more so, how to check it? Polymer coating: polyester (25 microns) or pural (50 microns). Priming, passivating layers.
To reduce the cost, the manufacturer, in his own conditions, can exclude some layers and cover the metal only with a primer with a finish coating in the desired color. There is a chance that the paint will peel off.
The second favorite technique for reducing the cost of a roofing sheet is its thickness:
It is considered optimal 0.5 mm. Anything below 0.45 mm is unreliable, it can miss, deform. Above 0.5 mm - overpayment. From too thin metal there are such examples:
A roof made of a thin sheet, with improper installation and with a snow load, will be flushed. This can happen during installation (the wind will bend the sheet).
Next example. Small manufacturers without quality control have a different color shade of paint in different batches:
For example, they took one volume, revised something in construction, bought in addition, and the shade of the second batch may already be different. For large manufacturers, this is impossible. There colors and their shades are strictly according to the RAL system. There are laboratories and a quality department.
Some installation errors:
We do not save on roofing screws. We fasten the sheets thoroughly. Otherwise, in a strong wind, the sheets can be lifted up like in the photo.
You need to consider whether you need snow holders. This is a constantly weak point of metal roofing.
They are pulled out, deformed. It can deform the roofing sheets themselves. And personally, I would refuse them for especially snowy regions. The maximum would be to leave them at the entrance to the house. And the passages, the paths were carried away from the walls of the house. And let the snow roll.
The conclusion is this: ask the sellers for documents (quality certificates, certificates of conformity), which will indicate the numbers of the parameters of the layers and the names of the manufacturers of rolled metal products. Let them check the thickness of the sheets with a micrometer. In general, make sure that the metal tile or metal profile you purchase is of high quality. And not all small producers save on quality. But you still need to make sure of this.
