Scientists have discovered a new state of matter - rotating glass magnets

We all know four classical states of matter: gas, liquid, plasma and solid state. But as it turned out, there is a whole world of exotic states.

So a joint scientific group from the universities of Radbud and Uppsala managed to determine a new state of matter, which was named "Self-induced spin glass" and can be used to form updated platforms for creating artificial intelligence (AI).

Magnetism and the new state

As you know, magnetism occurs only when all electrons in the atoms of the material under consideration have the same direction of rotation. But, for example, in the so-called "spin glass" atomic magnets are not ordered, the rotation occurs in random directions.

Note. By the way, they began to be called "glass" because the atomic arrangement in the crystal lattice very much resembles the structure of ordinary glass.

Until now, spin glasses have been found only in fairly complex alloys, but the last laboratory studies have shown that this condition occurs naturally in pure element of neodymium.

In order to distinguish natural "glass" from "glass in an alloy", it was decided to call it self-induced spin glass.

Neodymium, which is already famous for its unusual magnetic properties, it was decided to test using scanning tunneling microscopy (CMT).

In neodymium, a new state of matter was discovered - self-induced spin glass.

It was only through the use of supersensitive technology that it was possible to determine how neodymium actually behaves.

During the experiment, it was found that atomic rotations in neodymium rotate like a spiral. But as it turned out, there is an even stranger circumstance: all rotations occur at different speeds. This means that the shape of the spiral is constantly changing.

The CMT installation allows you to do the almost impossible, namely, to see the very structure of individual atoms and even determine where the north and where the south poles of the atoms are located.

After testing, scientists have suggested that not only neodymium can have such a new state of matter as glass magnets. Therefore, other materials will be subjected to the same verification.

Any discovery should be beneficial. So it is with the discovery of a new state of matter - rotating glass magnets should be useful. Scientists believe that they are the best fit for the implementation of an over-ambitious project of all mankind - the creation of artificial intelligence.

After all, the complex structure of neodymium is the best suited to simulate the basic behavior used in AI. So perhaps scientists have finally found a suitable base on which to build the first AI in history.
