How does royal geranium differ from the usual - zonal

I am sure there are enough pelargonium lovers among my readers. And not everyone knows that they have not an ordinary geranium growing, but the very one, the royal one. I don't want people to unknowingly repeat my mistake. Therefore, let me conduct a small educational program about a bright flower.

Royal geraniums are easily recognized externally by their flower shape. It is larger, wavy at the edges. The traditional color is white with raspberry or purple. Looks bright and very smart!

And also, as you may have noticed in the photo above, the royal pelargonium has a more "jagged" leaf edge. Clear corners look perky and distinguish geranium from the usual, zonal.

What did I do wrong

All my life I have looked after my pelargoniums the same way. Spring pruning was a must, after which the bushes fluffed up and released the umbrellas of their favorite inflorescences. Zonal pelargonium, but not royal... They bloomed, of course, but poorly. For the whole summer, 3-4 inflorescences were released.

I already thought, "This is not mine ..." until I talked to the geranium collector from whom I bought the cuttings. An expert, owner of vast experience and a large collection of all kinds of geraniums, pointed out to me my mistake.

Royal pelargoniums cannot be pruned in the spring. After all, most of the inflorescences of these plants are laid in the winter. Cutting them off, I lost some of the colorful bouquets and thought that I could never make friends with a magnificent flower!

To observe the lush flowering of the royal geranium, it, unlike the zonal geranium, must be cut only in the fall - in October. Now I know this and I will not make an annoying mistake!
