The main and important secret when covering roses for the winter.
Despite the fact that the climate has changed recently and the winters are no longer so frosty, there is still a threat to thermophilic plants.
Just a few really cold days are enough for your favorite roses to suffer. Wind protection is especially required for these delicate flowers.
Today I will share with you a proven method of protecting roses throughout the winter.
And so, what are the roses for at all? The fact is that a favorable climate for the plant is formed inside the shelter: moisture retention and protection from sudden temperature changes.
It is well known that heat-loving plants immediately begin to revive and release leaves when warming occurs.
But it can get warmer in the middle of winter, and then frost will hit again.
In this case, a shelter will help, which will not immediately allow unexpected heat, and then soften the frost and prevent the plant from starting an untimely growing season.
But it is worth covering roses wisely in order to prevent the occurrence of diseases in these "capricious" flowers. Before sheltering roses for the winter, they must be treated with copper sulfate.
Under the shelter, moisture usually collects and the stems of flowers begin to undermine, especially closer to spring.
If they are not treated in the fall, the plants will become vulnerable to various infections.
In addition to processing with vitriol, roses should be earthed. This will allow the flowers to retain moisture. Then the plants are covered with breathable material: sawdust, straw, dry leaves or hay.
It is very important that the covering material is breathable! Never cover flowers with wrap or similar non-breathable material.
To prevent the covering material from scattering during windy weather, the roses can be covered with spunbond on top, which is fixed on the sides with stones or bricks.
Roses should be covered when the ground is 1 cm frozen and will not melt during the day. If you cover it earlier, the roses will not be comfortable and they can then get sick.
