Set a new temperature record for a superconductor

click fraud protection

Superconductors are one of the important facets of the energy industry of the future. And scientists around the world are studying the phenomenon of superconductivity in various materials.

Until now, the main problem was that this phenomenon could be observed at extremely low temperatures.

But recent studies by American scientists have shown that the effect of superconductivity can be observed at temperatures of 15 degrees Celsius. That's what I want to tell you about this discovery.

Set a new temperature record for a superconductor

Superconductors and their main problem

In recent years, scientists have managed to create several superconductors that function at high enough (for similar materials) temperatures. And conductive materials were created based on lanthanum, uranium, actinium and other heavy metals.

And just a few years ago, an international group of American and Russian scientists found out that even ordinary hydrogen sulfide can act as a superconductor. But for this it needs to be compressed to several million atmospheres.

And in the process of experiments, superconducting properties were obtained at a temperature of -70 degrees Celsius.

A new record for a superconductor

So, in the course of numerous experiments with hydrogen sulfide, scientists were finally able to create a superconductor that demonstrated such unique properties at almost room temperature. True, for this it was necessary to provide a pressure of 2.6 million atmospheres.

Despite the incredible pressure required to manifest superconducting properties, scientists are proud of their achievement. After all, this is the first superconductor in the world that operates at 15 degrees Celsius, which is immediately 40 degrees higher than the previous record.

Scientists also emphasize that their conductor consists of organic materials (a mixture of hydrogen sulfide and methane).

And in the very near future, scientists will continue their experiments with other organic compounds, so that by trial and error find exactly those materials that will demonstrate superconducting properties at normal temperatures and atmospheric pressure.

Well, scientists can only wish them success. After all, if they really manage to find such a combination of materials, then this will be a real breakthrough in energy, and we will enter the era of completely new devices that will work using the principle superconductivity.
