The ground on my site has become loose thanks to autumn leaves.
Before they had time to look back, a golden autumn came and leaves fell from the trees. Someone gets upset that they will have to arm themselves with a rake and put a lot of effort into putting things in order.
But my husband and I, on the contrary, are happy with fallen leaves, which we always find use. We even ask neighbors who do not need fallen leaves to scoop up their area.
Why do we need so many leaves?
Everything is very simple. The fact is that we have heavy soil at our dacha and it is not suitable for all plants. To put the earth in order, we use fallen leaves, therefore we collect them wherever we can, we even go to the birch grove next to the summer cottage village and harvest the foliage there.
Thus, over the course of five years, we bring rotten fallen leaves into the ground and then plow the garden. Thanks to such accessible organic matter, the soil in our beds becomes lighter and fluffier every year.
How to properly prepare leaf litter compost?
The first step is to make a large box in which you can put the leaves. The container must be large enough.
Then, as soon as the first leaves begin to fall, they must be placed in a prepared box.
As soon as the container is full, cover it with a lid and leave it for two years. The composting time is unfortunately the only drawback, but the result is worth it.
Having bought a summer cottage, the first thing we did was organize a place for leaf compost and filled the box with foliage. In order for the soil to begin to improve as quickly as possible, we went to a birch grove and brought back decayed foliage.
Thus, the first two years we used compost from the forest, and in the third year our own was ready.
As you noticed, preparing compost does not require any effort, but there are still some limitations: in no case should you take leaves from diseased trees.
Also, foliage from oak and aspen is completely unsuitable for fertilization. It is best to use birch leaves or foliage from fruit trees as organic matter.
