An elementary procedure will protect Roses from diseases before winter. I tell you what must be done under the bush in the fall
I prefer frost-resistant varieties of roses - Eldorado, Ingrid Berman, Red Intuition, Black Cherry, Freesia, Black Magic. Minor weather adversities are not terrible for them, and I help them to cope with serious ones.
Preparation of rose bushes for wintering is reduced to me by performing simple actions. I want to share my secrets with novice growers.
When and how do I cover my roses before wintering
The protracted, warm autumn has become familiar to gardeners and gardeners. For the past few years, I have been starting to prepare roses for wintering not at the beginning, but at the end of October (or even in mid-November).
From the beginning of autumn until the onset of the first frost, I must do the following:
1) during the first half of September, generously, but without fanaticism (up to 15 buckets per week for each adult bush) I water roses, provided that the weather is not rainy.
After September 15, I stop watering even if there is no smell outside in the fall. The weather in autumn is deceiving, and by the time the first signs of winter appear, the earth should have absorbed moisture and completely dry out;
2) I do annual autumn pruning only floribunda - I prune it to the 4th bud. The rest of the rose bushes were cut short only in the first year after planting. Now I confine myself to removing fallen leaves, weak and diseased branches;
3) remove all weeds that may be in the shelter with my roses.
Before covering the flowers for wintering, I loosen the ground around the bush with my hands, trying to immerse my fingers into the ground to a depth of 4–5 centimeters. Then I process the near-stem area with Bordeaux liquid or a solution of copper sulfate and sprinkle it with ash.
I make a shelter from spruce branches - they perfectly protect roses from frost and gusts of cold wind. By the way, with a sudden thaw, accompanied by rain, my shelter does not get wet.
I never cover roses in rainy weather, I wait until the rains end and the earth on the flower bed dries out.
Rose bushes require a special approach
Roses are terrible lovers of life, most varieties bloom on last year's shoots. Therefore, I try to protect all the young growth that was formed before the onset of winter to the maximum.
For example, if this year forecasters promise a traditional winter, with snowstorms and severe frost, agrofibre will be laid on top of coniferous shelters, after bending the plants to the ground.
An important detail!
I bend the rose bushes before the onset of frost, so as not to break the frozen and stiff stems.
I bend each plant in several stages - I fix each twig with rope twines, fixed at the surface of the earth by means of specially stored cinder blocks.
