Who was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in physics and for what
Hello dear guests, as well as subscribers of my channel. Today I want to tell you about who and for which research (discovery) was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 2020.
Briefly about the Nobel Prize
The Nobel Prize is perhaps the most prestigious international prize that is awarded every year for the most outstanding achievements, research, inventions, as well as an invaluable contribution to world culture or to the development of everything society. Awards began to be issued in 1901 in such main areas as:
- Physics.
- Chemistry.
- Physiology or medicine.
- Literature
- Promotion of peace. The only prize awarded not in Sweden, but in Norway, but also since 1901.
Who was awarded the prize and for what
So this year the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for black hole research, and the awards were awarded physicist from England Roger Penrose, astrophysicist from Germany Reinhard Hansel, as well as astronomer from America Andrea Guez.
Penrose received an award for his discovery that the formation of black holes is a reliable prediction of general relativity. And already Roger and Andrea received their reward for discovering a supermassive black hole right in the center of our galaxy with you - the Milky Way.
Briefly about the work of scientists
So if you and I read the general theory of relativity, we will learn that the theory predicts the existence of black holes. But even the creator of the theory, A. Einstein did not believe this statement. But in 1965 R. Penrose gave evidence that black holes really exist and even painted their structure in detail.
The scientific work of two other laureates was concluded in the study of the heart of our galaxy with you, namely with the discovery of a supermassive object, which scientists named Sagittarius A *. A supermassive black hole weighs 4 million times the mass of the Sun.
