Don't Throw Wood Ash: 5 Ways to Use Stove Silver

Many of us consider wood ash to be a common waste and assign it a place in the backyard. Sometimes it is sprinkled with paths from ice and this limits the useful properties of "stove silver". But ash has other uses, which we will discuss in the article.

Against unpleasant odors

So that the contents of the outdoor toilet do not exude a bad smell, decompose more quickly and the soil does not oxidize, wood ash should be regularly poured into it. It is believed to inhibit the bacteria that cause this odor. And also ash can be poured into cat trays - the air in the house will become cleaner!

Insecticide

This complex name hides a common remedy for garden pest control. A solution is prepared from harmful insects as follows: 300 grams of wood ash is poured with a liter of boiling water and infused in a water bath for 30 minutes. After the solution is filtered and diluted with 10 liters of water.

For better adhesion of the insecticide to the plants, 50 grams of laundry or tar soap is added to the solution. The product effectively destroys ticks, leaf beetles, aphids and other pests.

Cleaning agent

From time immemorial, ash has been used as a cleaning agent for kitchen utensils. This is an environmentally friendly composition created by nature itself. It can be used to clean enamel and metal surfaces. Ash is used for cleaning surfaces both in dry and in paste form. Fresh ash is most effective - it contains more alkali. By the way, earlier ash was used in the production of soap.

Fertilizer

Wood ash contains a number of micro- and macroelements (Zn, K, Fe, Mg, S, P), which, unlike chemically synthesized fertilizers, are easily absorbed by plants. Ash is useful for soils with high acidity, and it is also an excellent top dressing for perennial plants, vegetables and fruit-bearing trees.

It is very simple to prepare a liquid fertilizer on wood ash: 200 grams of ash is added to a ten-liter bucket of cold water, after which the solution is infused for 5-7 days. Ash infusion is used for watering plants.

To normalize the acidity, the ash should be scattered over the soil, and then dug up the garden. The dosage of such treatment per square meter of land is strictly individual and is calculated based on the composition and acidity of the soil.

Supplement for animals

In animal husbandry, ash mixed with feed is actively used as a biological additive - it is rich in easily digestible minerals. Ash is especially useful for pigs: their daily ration is up to 100 grams. Cows are given 150 grams per day, calves up to 70. If you want to introduce ash into the diet of your animals, be sure to consult your veterinarian!

And it is also advised to give ash to chickens. But everything is not so simple here: you cannot give fresh ash to the bird - the lye will burn the mucous membrane! Wood ash for chickens must be kept for three months in a dry place. Permitted dosage: no more than 1% of the feed weight.

In winter, ash helps chickens fight off parasites on their skin and feathers. But you need to create a mixture that is not dangerous for biting. Usually 1 part of ash, 3 parts of sand (preferably river) are used. For three kilograms of sand-ash mixture, 50 grams of edible sulfur is added. This composition will help the chickens spend the winter better.
