For private houses or apartments, the use of landline telephones connected to a wired telephone network is a dubious advantage. With the development of mobile communications, wire telephony is becoming a thing of the past in the case of domestic and domestic use. Fixed connection via telephone cable can be justified only for remote villages, where constant interruptions and poor mobile communication can occur.

However, this situation does not yet work for offices, where landline telephones and multichannel connections are often used. And here the situation is justified and in demand at the present moment.

However, today we will not talk about the problems of this technology going into the past, but about how best to make the laying of the telephone wire and connect the telephone socket.

Features of the telephone socket

The situation with connecting a telephone socket has two types of implementation:

• the old standard that has been and is still in use since the communist era;
• according to the new European standard.

In this case, the phone socket will be very different. There will be differences in the connector, in the switching method, and even in the connection method. You can also use two options to connect a telephone jack:

• the use of overhead sockets - involves the installation of telephone sockets on the wall from the outside and under the wires laid in an open way;
• connection of a hidden socket - in this case, the wiring diagram is assumed to be internal, which means that the telephone sockets themselves are placed in an installation box or a socket box with its deepening into the wall.

The second option is preferable in all cases. It is both safer and much more aesthetically pleasing than the external laying of a telephone line. It is noteworthy that the new European standard for connecting a telephone socket in terms of the dimensions of the connector itself (not according to the connection scheme and switching scheme) does not differ from the computer connector. Quite often, especially in office premises, they are installed in one outlet in a double version. There are options for separate installation of computer and telephone sockets in one module.

What are the phone jack options? There are four types of them, namely:

• old standard RTShK-4, compatible only with old-style devices;
• modern version of the connector and the corresponding socket for it RJ11, which is used to connect a separate landline telephone;
• European version of the RJ14 plug-through type;
• with an RJ25 connector, often called RJ12, used for multi-drop connection.

Structurally, these options differ from each other. Outwardly, the old standard differs significantly from the rest, which use an RJ-type connector.

Design

By their structure, telephone sockets have little in common with conventional sockets used for electrical networks with a voltage of 220V. Depending on the type, they also have a different design, as well as a connection diagram. Therefore, installation and connection here also have their own nuances.

In general, the system works as follows:

• if the telephone is not connected to the cable, or the handset is down, the wire is under voltage of 40-60V DC;
• during the call and before picking up the handset, the current changes to alternating and the voltage rises to 120V;
• at the moment of removing the tube, the wires will be energized 6 - 12V.

The wire itself has two cores with a cross-section significantly smaller than that of a current-carrying electrical cable. For the purpose of connecting a multi-plug socket, a modern four-core wire can be used. However, the cross-section of each of them is designed only for the purpose of telephony, automation switching or fire alarm.

It is advisable to have practical and theoretical knowledge of how to connect a telephone socket for different switching cases. If you doubt whether you can do all the connection work yourself, it is better to turn to specialists for help.

Old and modern device standards

The design of the old type of telephone socket RTShK-4 involves the use of an old-style wire. This is the so-called "noodles" - a translucent two-core wire with a small conductor cross-section. The telephone socket itself is a hole for four contacts and one directing fifth knife, made of plastic. The fork is used exactly the same. This type can only be used for older devices.

Modern versions of the wire and telephone socket are different and even differ from each other. It depends on what role the phone plays in a particular network. This is either an end subscriber point or a device in a multi-channel network.

Connection methods and diagrams

How should you install a telephone socket? Depending on the situation and the type of the telephone socket itself, as well as the connector, there will be differences in the connection diagram. Therefore, it is worth considering separately the procedure for connecting the outlet wires, preparation, as well as switching options.

Connection procedure

There are two types of plug and telephone cable connections:

• on open wiring (wire laid outside);
• hidden wiring inside the wall.

If an open installation of wires is carried out, then they should be fixed on the wall using special plastic brackets. This is the simplest and least attractive option. If you want to add aesthetics, but the internal option of laying the telephone cable does not suit you, then we recommend that you place the wire itself in a plastic cable channel. Such cable channels can be matched to the appropriate color for your walls. This option will look better than outside wires.

When laying inside, you will need to make a channel in the wall, as well as make a hole for the telephone socket itself. It is best to place the wires in the wall in a plastic pipe, and before connecting the wires to the outlet, first install a socket of the appropriate size. After fixing the socket, the wires are removed from it to a length of 15-20 cm. Then you can plug in the telephone jack and secure it to the socket.

Preparation

To connect the telephone line for outdoor installations, you will need brackets and tools to secure them to the wall. If you install wires in a cable channel, first plastic boxes are attached, then a wire is laid in them and on top it is snapped into place with a cover. The socket is purchased as an invoice, it should be connected with fixation on the wall surface.

When installing the socket and telephone line internally, you will need a drill and a grinder. The grinder makes channels in the wall, and a drill with a special socket for socket outlets. The internal laying of the network and the internal socket itself look the best, although they require significantly more time and labor for such an installation.

Telephone, as well as computer sockets can be installed in a single module along with a conventional socket and switch. Often this connection option looks best, especially if all wiring products are presented in a single and original style.

Stripping the ends of the veins

Specifically, for a telephone wire, before switching it into an outlet, it is recommended to strip it from insulation to a length of 1-1.5 cm. After that, it will be more correct to mount small fork-shaped tips on the bare ends. This is a convenient and safe installation, which will be easy to maintain later.

The fork-shaped tip is taken to match the screw that secures the contact. If the contact is connected to the terminal using a spring, then the bare end of the wire is sufficient for high-quality fixation.

Connecting the socket wires

The wiring diagram for the telephone socket will differ depending on what role the device plays in a particular network. Here we can highlight:

• RJ11 - for conventional two-wire connection schemes;
• RJ14 - Has four pins for four wires. When switching one subscriber, use the 2nd and 3rd terminals. If several lines are supposed to be connected, then it is necessary to use the 1st and 4th terminals. The connection of the line itself is supposed to be red and green wires;
• RJ25 (RJ12) - has three connection pins. The use of such a connector requires appropriate qualifications;
• RTShK-4 - designed for a two-wire connection. Switching scheme of several subscribers, their connection is carried out using a capacitor.

The RJ25 connector is used in multi-drop networks that need to be configured and properly wired. A complex scheme is used here, and here it is better to entrust this work to a specialized company.
